Thank you for your comment!

Yes, we have received demands, requests and threats from The TEFL Academy.

They might be able to get away with having verified customer reviews deleted on other platforms, but Trusted TEFL Reviews publishes all verified customer reviews – good or bad.

We published this blog post to show them for what they are and for what they do: https://trustedteflreviews.com/2025/09/09/the-tefl-academy-fraud/

All the best in Mexico!

I felt compelled to share my experience because I used to work for a TEFL and travel website that, among other things, collected reviews of TEFL programs. I started in 2020 and left in May of this year. Before the current owners of The TEFL Academy took over, there were no issues. However, the moment the new owners took control, there was a noticeable shift in the company’s ethical direction.

My role primarily involved reviewing and verifying feedback to ensure there were no fake reviews. By the time The TEFL Academy changed ownership, I had become very skilled at identifying fake reviews. It wasn’t long before I started noticing a sudden uptick in reviews for the program, and approximately 90% of them showed clear signs of manipulation. They were all coming from the same IP address, which I later discovered was the computer of Caitriona McTiernan, one of their affiliate marketers, who must make a significant amount of money recommending The TEFL Academy.

I knew it was her computer because she would send numerous emails from the same IP address, demanding the removal of negative reviews. Initially, she was polite, but over time, she became more insistent, sometimes unpleasant, in her requests.

Starting in September of last year, I began seeing a second IP address associated with fake reviews for The TEFL Academy. This person also started emailing me, ordering me to take down negative reviews. She even asked if positive reviews of competing TEFL companies could be deleted. That person turned out to be Megan Broccoli, another affiliate marketer for The TEFL Academy.

Eventually, I decided to leave my job. I couldn’t look myself in the mirror anymore, knowing I was working for a company that was essentially taking money from The TEFL Academy (and other TEFL companies listed on the site) while I was forced to comply with requests to remove obviously fake reviews. The company I worked for was registered in the USA but operated out of the Philippines, where I thankfully no longer live. I loved the culture and the people, but many expats there take advantage of lax laws and pay off local officials.

I now live in Mexico, and life is far better, teaching English. I’ve read all of your articles about The TEFL Academy, and you are 100% correct. I’ve also read through all of The TEFL Academy’s reviews on your site and can’t spot any fake ones. Great job! Respect to you, and I wish you strength—I’m sure The TEFL Academy must be bombarding you with requests and demands!

Please use “Anonymous” for my comment. I wouldn’t feel safe having my real name published. Thanks!

Mark.

Thanks for your comment.

Yes, we agree that DEAC is a legitimate accreditation.

What we don’t agree, though, is that The TEFL Academy (TTA) is accredited by them.

You can read more about it here:

To say that it isn’t is dishonest. “DEAC has been recognized by the U.S. government since 1959 as an accreditor of post-secondary institutions engaged primarily in providing distance education degree- and non-degree-bearing programs.”

Thanks for chiming in.

Actually, it makes perfect sense.

The TEFL Academy is in no way accredited by Ofqual. They are only regulated by them.

Being recognized by Ofqual only means that the level of study that you do on the course has been registered at level 5. Ofqual level 5 is a sign that the course provider has had the content of the course checked by an Ofqual regulated examination board to make sure that it is at the right level.

It does not follow that the TEFL program is accredited by Ofqual.

Regarding your comparison of the TEFL Academy with the CELTA and DELTA qualifications, this is similarly misleading.

CELTA and DELTA are Ofqual regulated AND accredited by the University of Cambridge – Cambridge Assessment English.

The TEFL Academy’s courses are regulated by Ofqual and accredited by no one.

Sorry to bring you this bad news, but it is true.

You can check it yourself by contacting Ofqual.

Another point worth noting is that the quality control standards of Ofqual are a lot lower than those of Cambridge Assessment English.

There is just no way of credibly comparing The TEFL Academy with either CELTA or DELTA.

You can read more about TEFL accreditation in the TEFL Accreditation Guide:

Their certificates are accredited by OFQUAL . The Cambridge Celta certificate and the Delta diploma are also accredited by OFQUAL and recognized Internationally.

I was intrigued by this so I did a bit of my own research and yes, TTA is not accredited. The certificates The TEFL Academy issues are not accredited. Only “recognised”. I’m not sure whether this falls under the definition of a “scam”, but I think it comes pretty close to it. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to take a TEFL course through this company.

The TEFL Academy TESOL certificate is a UK-only recognized TEFL/TESOL certificate – meaning that the certification is difficult to use outside of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and N. Ireland.

Despite this essential detail, The TEFL Academy claims that their TEFL/TESOL course is the numero uno of international TEFL/TESOL certification courses. This is a lie – i.e. a scam.

For a company, offering an unaccredited TEFL/TESOL certification course, this claim is a rather big stretch of anyone’s imagination. Yet, despite the claims by The TEFL Academy that they are accredited, if you look closer, you soon discover that they are only REGULATED by the organizations that they claim to be accredited by – NOT ACCREDITED.

As a far better TEFL/TESOL course alternative, Trusted TEFL Reviews recommends choosing one of the following (fully accredited) international TEFL/TESOL certification course programs:

https://trustedteflreviews.com/2021/04/02/best-online-tefl-courses-tesol-2020/

As a final note, The TEFL Academy has continuously tried to undermine the authority of trustedteflreviews.com by claiming that this website is biased towards certain online TEFL/TESOL certification programs. They have mostly enacted this through third-party websites, operated by their ‘Brand Ambassadors’. The motivation for doing so, is to reduce the credibility of this review’s website – thus reducing the credibility of their poor customer reviews.

The TEFL Academy, with its current management, should be avoided.
