I have had nothing but a positive experience with University of Toronto TEFL, enrolling in their flagship TEFL certification course online in November 2025 – completed in December 2025.

It baffles me why some students complain about the price of the course when they should be viewing it as an investment. I blame the dirt-cheap ones that charge $20. Does anyone in their right mind really think they are going to have top-notch training and excellent job prospects with one of those courses? Of course they aren’t.

The course was very user-friendly and, as you can probably imagine, went into depth. This isn’t a TEFL mill program that’s going to automatically pass you and send you a cheap-looking certificate.

The certificate/specializations look great on my résumé and will prove to be career-changing.

I first heard about the possibility of teaching English as a viable full-time occupation while I was studying at college. Before then, I had no idea that it was possible to do such a thing. Because I majored at OISE – UoT, it was a no-brainer for me to take the certification with the university TEFL program. Well actually the program is delivered through Teach Away, not through the university, but the certificate awarded has the university’s name on it and for all intents and purposes it is a university TEFL program.

I don’t want to repeat what others have already written about this program, except that I also thoroughly enjoyed everything about it and it fully prepared me for ESL teaching.

It is one of the more expensive courses, but I feel you get what you pay for.

Since completing the course I have been teaching online to professionals based in East China, and I have also managed to pick up a few hours of volunteering here in Ontario.

With so many courses offering the TEFL certificate, it can become a little daunting when you need to decide on one program. I can recommend the TEFL course offered by UoT Teach Away as being a professionally run program that paves the way for employment after course completion.

There are so many TEFL companies offering the TEFL online but something drew me to the University of Toronto TEFL program. It is more expensive than most other online courses but you definitely get your money’s worth. After the course, I was connected with their partner site Teach Away and they were fantastic with helping me find a teaching program overseas. The University of Toronto TEFL program was definitely the right choice. To anyone reading this and wondering if to travel abroad to teach or not, you should definitely go for it. I’m in South Korea where it can be hard work, but the payoff is worth it. Back home I saw most of my salary going on rent and bills, but over here I’m actually able to save and still have enough to splurge at weekends. A totally recommended experience!

Just as the previous review of OISE noted, their course tuition fees are too high and this is the reason for me awarding them four stars (not five). But if you can get past this barrier then you won’t be disappointed with this international tefl option and it will open teaching English job doors for you. I had my mind set on teaching English overseas in China. Seven months later and I was teaching my first English class, here in Harbin. I mean, what’s cooler than that? It was really easy to find a teaching job because schools in China advertise throughout the year, so employment options aren’t only limited to one or two times in the teaching year. Applying for the work visa turned out to be the only real pain in the butt so I chose to arrive in China on a tourist visa after a couple of months, I traveled down to Hong Kong, where I was able to transfer it over to a proper work visa. I want to point out that my initial visa issues were because I didn’t fully have all my ducks in a row, as I was accepted for a teaching position quicker than I imagined, so it shouldn’t really be an issue for anyone applying with more time on their hands to properly collect all the required documentation. One word of advice about teaching English in China is that schools will only accept you if you are a Native English Speaker and hold a Bachelor’s degree. A tefl certificate isn’t necessary but helps heaps. It’s also been a major culture shock relocating here, so you do need to bear this in mind too. I’m just so thankful to OISE University of Toronto TEFL and pleased with myself for making this possible and deciding to go for it.

The University of Toronto tefl online course is a great program. Very thorough. It’s easy to follow and you receive a lot of support.

The only negative is the course price, which I now find is WAY more than other tefl programs out there.

Still, if you are looking for a stellar course that will get you internationally certified and if you can swallow the high course fee then you can’t go wrong with this course.
