I recommend avoiding TEFL Institute. I signed up with them in May of last year and I wasn’t able to find work with the certificate.
They’re a British company with dubious accreditation.
No school I applied to for work recognized them.
I had to retake TEFL with another company with ACCET accreditation and found work without issue.

ACCET and ACTEFLC are the two big accreditation organizations. I passed TEFL with ACTEFLC accreditation – it opened many doors for me. Avoid doing a UK-based TEFL course as they often claim to be “accredited” by AQC, DEAC, and QUALIFI, but these only recognize courses. Accreditation and recognition are two entirely separate things.

Finally! A comprehensive TEFL accreditation article that shows the one’s accepted worldwide, without including any of the dodgy ones that just accept an annual fee. Oh, in response to your question, Kevin, no, The TEFL institute is not legit.

Has anyone here had experience with http://www.teflinstitute.com (The TEFL Institute)? If so, how did you find the course quality, support, and job placement services? If the certification/content is basically the same, why are the prices so different between TEFL Online Pro and OISE? For OISE, are you basically paying for the “status” of it being attached to a university? Or is there an actual quality difference in the content?

TEFL Online Pro and OISE UoT TEFL are both excellent, reliable programs.
If I had to choose between the two, I’d probably choose TEFL Online Pro.
It has the same international recognition as OISE and is significantly less expensive.
If you have the $$$$, OISE is also worth it.

Very helpful advice for any TEFL newbies out there. Took my TEFL through the teflonlinepro.com program (ACTEFLC fully accredited) and have used the certificate without issues for online teaching work and for overseas teaching jobs in Japan and South Korea. A friend of mine took his through the teflonline.teachaway.com program (OISE fully accredited) and he also hasn't come up against any stumbling blocks when using his certificate
