When you hear TEFL mill, you think of this program. It is a little costly when you compare it to similar programs but requires hardly any work to pass the classes. The main bulk of the course involves modules that can be clicked through and no academic rigor is needed to pass them. My TEFL does offer 120-hour classes with a great deal of flexibility, which is ideal for working professionals, so I am acknowledging this as a strong positive for the course. However, passing classes at this school is incredibly easy and the whole setup doesn’t encourage in-depth learning. It does touch on the basics of teaching English as a second language. A TEFL certificate from this school probably won’t carry a lot of weight in my opinion.

I chose to take this course, based on the good feedback I read on various blogs published on the internet. It was, therefore, a big surprise to me when the course turned out to be passable in content and the support pretty much non-existent. The course is divided into modules, each covering different aspects of teaching English as a foreign language. I thought the choice of materials covered in the modules was very good. The problem that I had was that I was able to complete a module in under an hour-meaning the whole course in its entirety took only a couple of days to complete. Each module is a page or two of text and a (simple) quiz below. There is no way this course is 120 hours. It’s a fraction of that. From payment to certification, I didn’t receive any personalized communication from MyTEFL. From payment to certification, everything is automated. After the certification step, that was it from MyTEFL. No help getting a job. No help with teaching abroad information. There was an option I saw advertised on the MyTEFL website for job placement services, but I have read that these are generally best avoided. I would like to recommend MyTEFL, but I just can’t-based on the service I received. Perhaps I was unlucky and took the course during a temporary lull in their (as one blogger wrote) ‘well-oiled TEFL machine’. Or, perhaps the blogger hadn’t even taken the course and was just more concerned about the affiliate coupon which, yes, I did enter upon checkout-to save 35% off the course fee. The price of the MyTEFL 120-Hour course is good. You’ll be able to use the certificate abroad. I’m just not sure whether you’ll learn a substantial amount about TEFL by taking this course. And if you think you will need help to find work after the course, you might find yourself out on a limb as I was.

I’m not really sure how high the bar is set for a course like this because I’ve never taken a course online before but I was reasonably happy with this one and it seemed to cover all the main topics of teaching English. This was nowhere near the 120 hours advertised though as I was able to complete the whole course in less than 20 hours. MyTEFL was quick to answer any course questions I had but when you complete the course the communication flow abruptly ends. Overall though it was a pretty good online TEFL course.

MyTEFL was a good choice for me because I was looking for the perfect combination of low prices and quality course content.

The 120 Hour international TEFL certification course covers all of the main classroom topics and is the international gold standard for the teaching English abroad qualification.

I actually first heard about MyTEFL from a friend who recommended them to me after he had gone through their program and was teaching English out in China as a result.

A few months since I graduated from the MyTEFL program and I’m getting ready for my own TEFL journey: I’m flying out to Ho Chi Minh City next month to begin teaching for a national recruiter.

If you have no responsibilities back home and love travel, TEFL is a totally recommended option for you.

Although there were some grammatical mistakes I picked up during the course, I thought it had a well-developed structure and fit my learner’s needs. Not quite sure how they reach the 120-figure that this course claims it contains as it took me a couple of wet afternoons to complete, but nonetheless it got me TEFL qualified so that’s all I care about. They’ll email you a PDF copy of your certificate after the course which you can print out. This did remind me of an SNL sketch I saw once about taking a university course online and initially made me feel incredibly nervous that I had been scammed. But upon checking I see it is standard for a lot of these TEFL schools. I do have to agree with the preceding reviewer that the course just doesn’t live up to its online hype and that yes, there does seem to be a disconnect between what a few blogs say about this course and what is actually provided, but as a general rule of thumb it is a decent course – it comes in a lot cheaper than some other options and if you can ignore the odd grammatical error here and there then I see no reason why not to pay the few hundred bucks to take it. Just take into account the extra fee at the end when you will want a hard-copy version of your certificate. A mixed review really.
