It’s been a couple of years now since I studied TEFL with ICAL, so this is me finally getting around to writing a review of them.

I remember not expecting too much from an online study course. It was my first time studying online (not my last though!) and I had read a lot of conflicting info in online forums about whether or not it was recommended to take the TEFL certification online. There were strong arguments for taking it in person and other solid arguments for taking it online. The main argument for the in-person corner was that online certificates are not as recognized as in-person ones, and the main argument for the online corner was that the in-person certification courses are overpriced and an unnecessary expense.

Well, I can most certainly clear this up now.

I have NEVER experienced any issue with using my online TEFL certification when applying for jobs.

My own personal experience is that I was NEVER (not once) asked whether my certification was attained online or in person. And when I was teaching in Seoul, I taught with other teachers who had online and in-person TEFL certificates, and both groups were teaching at the same level and for the same money.

My advice is to take your TEFL certification online.

I’m so happy that I decided to finally do a TEFL course online because since finishing college my life has taken a default monotonous journey which I had hoped to avoid. By this, I mean that I was stuck in an 8-6 job, overworked, and only looking forward to the weekends for any sense of personal freedom. Taking the TEFL course has literally transformed my life in that now I work for myself, teaching English online, and I can (within reason) pretty much choose which hours I want to work and how many days off a week I want. Of course, I don’t have full control over my schedule, but I do have a lot more control than I had previously.

The ICAL TEFL course was instructive and my course tutor was very knowledgeable. I liked how I could study at my own pace and I also appreciated the way the course is divided into manageable sections. The way I saw the course was that it began quite easily and then became more difficult and intense as I proceeded through it. It wasn’t too difficult. There was a healthy balance between having the ability to complete the modules and being pressed enough to use my brain power to a higher capacity.

The only downside to the course is that it isn’t officially accredited by an external body. ICAL TEFL doesn’t try to hide this fact, though, and they have promised that it will be possible to teach in other countries with the certification. Overall I am giving this course the top marks.

An excellent and highly informative course detailing the core TESOL learning elements, with reference to grammar, phonetics, classroom management, teaching listening, and speaking. ICAL gives you a long time to take the course and I finished it in two weeks only. I worked on the course every day of those two weeks and I would say a more realistic timeline for most people would be to expect to complete the course in around one month. This course provides the learner an opportunity to create student games, a key element of ESL teaching. In conclusion, ICAL TEFL has been educational and fun, covering all areas within the subject range. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Teach English Abroad. I escaped the 9 to 5 job treadmill.

Probably like many of you reading this, I was stuck in a job where I was paid too little and where too much was expected of me. The final straw came when a promotion was up for grabs and where I was a natural choice. It was given to another employee who had a family connection with the manager. That was it, I told myself. I was sick of working for relative peanuts and feeling that I wasn’t really going anywhere.

I became a member of many earn money online Facebook groups (none of them proved fruitful in any way) and then I became attracted to the idea of the travel and work combo. After spending weeks in front of my screen, I came across this teaching English overseas opportunity and it seemed like the perfect way to escape the 9 to 5 job treadmill.

As a (proud) Canadian, I wanted to take my TEFL through a Canadian company. ICAL was one of the companies which caught my attention, and after some further research, I paid for their 120-hour course and started their online teacher training course.

I was actually surprised by how straightforward the course was. It’s explained extremely well. OK, some of the units demand more brain power than others, but overall I would say this is a course that most Canadians can pass without any teaching experience.

A month later, I booked a ticket to Bali. A few weeks after that, I moved on to Jakarta. Bali is beautiful, but the teacher market there is saturated. I taught in Jakarta for a year and then did another couple of semesters teaching in Surabaya, where there are endless teaching opportunities and where the air quality is much cleaner than in the capital.

I met my future wife while I was teaching in Surabaya.

We moved back a few years ago to set up an online teaching business. We are still going strong.

If you want out of the boring 9 to 5, take an online TEFL course and redefine your professional career. It takes courage but pays back many times over. Freedom is not free, you still need to work your socks off, but it’s worth it in the end.

I don’t have a bad word to write about the ICAL Tefl online certificate course. I was recommended the course through a friend of a friend, who had taken the exact same 120-hour course a year prior to me taking it. She described it as a no-nonsense course, not trying to pretend to be something it isn’t. And this was my experience too. One of the things which struck me, and which I found refreshing, was how ICAL state on their website that there is no accreditation for online Tefl courses and that you should be suspicious of any course which does claim accreditation. I thought this was incredibly upfront. And further to more research, when I was later interviewed for jobs, I found this information to be true. The signup process is quick and easy. I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting the course was, given that it is only studied online as a distance learning setup. It took me 2 months to finish the course, but if you put your head down and get on with it then my guess is that you can easily complete it in 1 month. I was taking the course while I was still working full-time and some more, so this is the reason why it took me so long to complete. No difficulty getting a job with the ICAL certificate. None whatsoever. I sent off my resume to many, many schools. Not one questioned the validity of the certification and not one questioned if the certificate was accredited. I now conclude that the courses offering accredited Tefl online only add “accreditation” to further sell more courses to unsuspecting students who think it will make a difference. It doesn’t. I’ve been teaching in Chengdu, China for 7 semesters now. Taking this course was one of the better life decisions I made.

Is ICAL Tefl legit? I had no problems with this program.

A friend of mine recommended I take the Tefl certificate because I was out of work and I desperately wanted to save money and travel. It was the first I’d heard about Tefl and at first, it seemed a bit too good to be true. I mean, travel and earn money? It sounded like pie in the sky. And then I looked into it more and realized that the opportunity was real and that people have been teaching English overseas for decades.

After Googling ‘Tefl course Canada’ I found the ICAL Tefl site and it seemed pretty legit to me. So I went for it. I paid and began just like that. Oh, and (btw) the course I took was one of their online courses. 120 hours. It actually took me a little longer than 120 hours to complete, but my Tefl certificate is a 120-hour one. This seems to be the standard number of hours that employers look for.

I enjoyed taking the course. There was help from my online tutor whenever I needed it. The way the course works is very smooth and the whole thing just makes a lot of sense. I didn’t come away from it feeling more confused or anything like that. There were some very difficult parts, but the tutor option was really helpful in regards to showing me a clear path through what I labeled the Grammar Jungle.

The course and service from ICAL Tefl were a really pleasant experience. I recommend!

For $265.00 all-inclusive for their (ICAL TEFL) 120-hour TEFL certification course, I considered my purchase good value for money. The course (online) comes with a Personal Tutor, who really is there to offer constructive support.

I felt this course taught me everything needed to start teaching.

My only criticism is the Google placement ads on the school website. Not sure why they saw fit to include external advertising on their corporate school page, but it never interfered with my studies and I guess they (ICAL TEFL) can do what they want with their website. Apart from the (slightly) annoying external ads, the rest of the site looks great and offers clear, to-the-point TEFL class information.

I did have the opportunity of having a brief chat with the owner, who was professional and courteous.

I am extremely happy with the overall experience I gained from taking the ICAL online TEFL certification course. The course itself is designed in a way that makes it enjoyable to comprehend the skills and they have a great customer care team too. Being a native English speaker, it was a doddle finding work – have spent this school year (since September) teaching English for a really good language school in Brno, Czechia. Something non-EU citizens wanting to teach English within the EU do need to be made aware of though is the necessity to have all your official documents in order when you arrive as you only receive an initial 90-day visa before you have to leave and then return after further 90 days. If you set your mind to it though you shouldn’t experience too much difficulty in getting all your ducks lined up in a row. I love living and teaching in Europe!

What the hell is ICAL TEFL up to? Why are they accepting third-party Google ads on their school website now???!!! I thought it was time I shared my experience with the ICAL online TEFL course. Typed in their school website, and reading through their homepage couldn’t help but literally laugh out loud at the advert for a ‘Professional Outcall Massage’ a little way down between ‘General Articles’ and ‘TEFL Employment’. Very unprofessional and it doesn’t inspire confidence in future students. Would recommend stopping this asap. Lost for words really.

And now to my review…

…I wasn’t really that impressed with my course study with ICAL TEFL.

On a positive note, they are quick in responding to your emails, and they do provide feedback on the work submitted.

But. The feedback just came over as overly officious and borderline condescending, and the course itself is unnecessarily convoluted. It feels like they went out of their way to make it purpose difficult so people would feel they were getting their money’s worth.

ICAL TEFL is one of the oldest online TEFL schools and it shows. They really need some fresh blood in the company. Fresh blood that can completely revamp the course materials, and fresh blood that doesn’t think adding Adwords ads on their homepage is a solid business move.

#disappointing.

I recently completed the ICAL 120-hour tefl online certification course and I have a few complaints about this program, which set me back at only $265.00 all-inclusive. My online tutor was there to assist whenever I needed the help, with excellent feedback and an ocean of patience. The course was well-designed and logically followed what I was expecting from a teacher-training course. There were the usual suspects, such as grammar, but also their advertised practical tools & lesson ideas that have continued to aid me in the classroom. Course access was 24/7 and without technical issues. So regarding the course structure and support, I have no qualms. Everything worked like clockwork. I also liked how ICAL tefl is upfront about the salary you can expect to earn as a qualified English teacher. A few other schools quote much higher salaries on their websites which must be surely checked into as a case of false advertising because there is no way you can earn up to $4,000.00 a month in Vietnam. What ICAL tefl quoted as being possible to earn post-course was more realistic. The only ICAL course negatives I had were minor in comparison to the positives. My tefl course certificate was delivered electronically and I could have done with a hard copy of my certificate too. Not a big deal though as my school accepted the electronic version without hesitation. No real job guidance to speak of per se but I already had a job lined up so again this wasn’t a huge issue for me. My ICAL 120-hour tefl online certification course was a positive experience and contributed to the help I needed to secure my teaching job here in Taiwan. So, therefore, I recommend the investment.

With ICAL TEFL, I was able to afford to work at my own pace and oh boy was this convenient! I think I had something like literally forever to get everything in and I just managed it with a couple of days to spare just shy of 6 months. The nice sweet staff at ICAL TEFL did tell me that some people take years to polish off the course so I didn’t feel so bad that I took half a year to complete a 150 hours program. To be quite honest I wasn’t expecting anything else from ICAL TEFL once I’d sorted everything out and received the certificate, so I was very pleasantly surprised when I was told to contact them when I needed job guidance. I’m just so excited about teaching English overseas and I think I’ll wanna teach in Thailand when I’m ready to take the leap. Bangkok or Chang May look promising. Now I know it’s possible and it’s all thanks to ICAL TEFL. Sweet! Five stars!
