At the time I wanted to study for my TEFL certification, but I was worryingly low on funds and time. This prevented me from taking an In-class course, so instead, I chose to take the Combined TEFL course offered through the Vantage program, based out of Bangkok.

It afforded me the flexibility with which my budget dictated by making it possible to take the method section of the TEFL course online, and then I was able to choose one of the time dates for my trip to Thailand to complete the observed teaching practice.

I’m not sure whether a Combined course is for everyone because it does add those extra costs. Still, I wanted to get my feet wet before I dived fully in so traveling to the country to take the observed teaching sessions where I wanted to be teaching sat well for me and was worth the additional investment.

Finding work after the course was not an issue.

I started teaching at a couple of schools and teaching a few private students, in the Bangkok central district. The pay is the highest in the country here, but I couldn’t get used to the frenetic pace and humidity of Bangkok.

I’m now teaching up in Chiang Mai and it is SO much more mellow up here.

Teaching Bangkok if you love major cities and spending hours in traffic jams. Teach in Chiang Mai if you value air quality and about a hundred yoga studios to choose from

Vantage is the best TEFL option in Thailand.

There are a bunch of TEFL schools operating in Thailand, meaning it was a bit difficult to decide on which one to take. All of them appear to offer the same type of qualification, and most of them seem to have good student feedback. A couple of them even offer their courses near the beach. However, when I dug deeper into these I began to doubt the seriousness of those courses. Their websites are full of beach pics showing TEFL students having fun in the sea, but not much about the nitty-gritty specifics of the syllabus. Vantage, on the other hand, was upfront with me from the start about what I would be covering in the course and what to expect when I began teaching.

This is the TEFL school you should go through if you have decided to teach English in Thailand. Yes, the course can be demanding in places, but by the end, you will have a sufficient foundation to teach Thai students English. If you are going to invest in a TEFL course, you might as well take a course that will prepare you properly for the job ahead. That’s my way of thinking anyway.

I didn’t stick around Bangkok for so long after I had completed the course and received the certificate because I wanted to live somewhere a little less hectic. I did meet teachers though who love living in the city. I instead headed up north, to Chiang Mai. Which I love!!! CM is way more chilled than BK. I see that the money teaching is better in BK, but the cost of living is cheaper up here so it seems to roughly even out in terms of what you can and can’t afford. I recommend anyone coming to Thailand to take their TEFL, to take the one offered by Vantage. You get what you pay for and the staff there are so helpful and supportive. Also, consider Chiang Mai as a teaching destination for a laid-back lifestyle and as a city with exceptionally friendly locals. Vantage gets a thumbs-up from me.

The school has been pretty good and the alumni network is there if needed. LOVED teaching English in Thailand!! I taught in Bangkok for almost a year, switching to Vietnam for a couple of months – HCMC is far more chaotic than Bangkok – and then returning to Thailand to teach up north in Chiang Mai for a further couple of months. My classes switched to online because of COVID, but I’m hoping to return to Thailand when the country opens up again. I’ve read updates that they plan to open up the country to tourism and teachers again in Spring 2021, so that’s when I’m planning to head back out there.

I took the TEFL 120 hours course. All of the material is self-taught, and that may be a pro/con depending on your learning style. For me, it was a major pro, as I love to learn by myself within the comfort of my own home. But if that is a problem for you, it might be wise to search for a school offering the qualification in class. Again though, the online system fits really well with me and I think you basically get the same certificate at the end of the course no matter if you took it online or in a classroom.

I have to write that I just love teaching English in Thailand. Thailand is a fantastic place to teach English!

I’m located in Chiang Mai. It’s technically a city, in the north of Thailand, with about 100,000 inhabitants. But while it is Thailand’s second-largest conurbation, it doesn’t have all of the negatives I experienced when I lived and worked in Bangkok. CM is more of a large town than a city.

When I was teaching at BKK, my daily journey to work took me an hour on a good day and an hour and a half to 2 hours if there was particularly bad traffic congestion. Traffic congestion is an unfortunate trade-off when working in BKK and on most days it took me about 3 hours to make the round trip from home to school and then back home again. The salaries are higher in Bangkok and there are beaches and islands pretty close by, but after getting my first teaching contract done and dusted I took the advice of a friend and traveled north to the much more chilled-out Chiang Mai.

For a 25-hour working week, I earn (take home) 32,000 Baht. This is roughly $1,000 US per month.

Things are a lot cheaper up here though and 32,000 is actually enough to pay for my rent, food, utilities, yoga, etc. You won’t become rich by teaching here, but who comes to Thailand to get rich anyway? I came for the friendly people, the landscapes, the weather, and the excellent food. Chiang Mai has it all.

I wholeheartedly recommend CM as a teaching destination and I also recommend Vantage TEFL, which I took my TEFL through. Having the Vantage TEFL certificate has been the passport I needed to get started in Thailand.

What more can I add? I discovered tefl online pro on another review website that also showed they were recommended by their graduate students, so choosing this course over others was a no-brainer.

I’m especially pleased with my decision after reading about some of the scam TEFL course online tricksters. I gave my money to the tight company.

And, it worked out at only £155. I think that’s about 200 American Dollars at the current exchange rate. I think the course gets more expensive when they aren’t running a discount though.

I arrived to Thailand last week to begin a year’s teaching English stint at an international school, close to Chiang Mai. Everything has been upfront and transparent. Paul emailed me the teaching contract before I had even committed to Thailand, and asked me to thoroughly read through it and then get back to him if I needed to bring anything up. It was your basic standard employment contract.

And when I arrived after that long flight (I don’t travel well) I met with the Headmaster of the school and the other 10 or so foreign teachers. That’s when I was invited into the school’s main office and asked to sign the contract. I had Paul’s copy with me, so I was able to compare and make certain nothing was untoward. It is a carbon copy. Exactly what Paul had given me to read through and check before coming.

Without tefl online pro, I probably could have quite easily found a teaching job in Thailand, but they were just so friendly and so transparent that I doubt I could have found a job as great as the one I began on Monday.

The money’s good too. Much more than what you get working at a bog-standard language school.

But it’s hot! So come prepared with light clothes for teaching. Paul did advise me, but I didn’t realize just so hot and humid it can get up here.

I’m writing this review of the Tefl Online Pro program from a cafe in Chiang Mai – a city btw that I have come to love over these past 8 months. I recommend anyone coming to Thailand, ok see the beaches and do the island thing, but here up north everything is much more chilled and Chiang Mai is a very special place. It’s considered a city, but it’s really a large town, with amazing coffee, lots of opportunities for doing yoga, and incredible food, and it’s a lot cheaper to live in compared with other cities I’ve visited.

I know it sounds cliche, but I took my online TEFL on the beach when I spent a month on Koh Chang island. Luckily my room had great internet access, so working on the course didn’t present any internet connection issues for me.

I chose the 120-Hr Professional course mainly because I did have some teaching experience, but not enough to qualify for their Fast-Track online course.

The course is based on a very user-friendly learning system and as others have written, I really enjoyed the quizzes at the end of each module. It’s definitely important to be tested on the content you learn and this was an entertaining way of doing that.

You cover all the essential teaching topics and out of them all I’d have to write that the module on Phonology for me was the most interesting, and I have been using it loads in my classes since.

I know Tefl Online Pro is famous for its job support and I did suggest having one consultation, with btw a very informative and very helpful woman (sorry, I can’t remember your name now). We spoke for about an hour and she recommended I teach English up here in Chiang Mai. At first, I was a bit nervous about packing up and heading to a place I’d never been to before, but I am so glad I took her advice. I know I keep repeating myself, but Chiang Mai is such a cool town to live and work in.

I arrived on a Monday, began interviewing on Wednesday, and by the following Monday I had 3 solid job offers, so I took the best offer (obviously) and began teaching the following week.

I earn about 40,000 Baht per month, which I hear from other teachers here is well above the average rate. I don’t know if my certificate got me a high salary but I’m definitely aware that the certificate was essential in helping me find a job here. The language school (the one I work for now) contacted Tefl Online Pro for a reference and they must have made me out to be God’s gift to teaching because, after that phone call, they just said I got the job. On the spot. Just like that.

I really enjoyed learning TEFL online and I’m really happy with my choice of online TEFL school and the really useful advice they gave me. And Chiang Mai rocks!
