ITA is a Solid Choice For TEFL.

I’m a bit older than your average English tutor. 61 years young this year to be exact. I thought it might be a good idea to travel and teach and to push myself. ITA was one of the programs which I found and I liked what they were offering. There is a steep learning curve to become familiarized with the program’s study LMS. This took a few days. I did become used to it quite quickly though. One of the standouts is the shared community space where you chat with other participating students in the program. I have quite the list of teaching experience and I didn’t find the course to be out of my reach. Given what I know now about teaching (again, long list) I can safely say that this is a grounded and comprehensive TEFL online course.

I’ve been applying for jobs in the Middle East. Last week I had a reply from a school based in Dubai. My TEFL certificate is recognized there and I’ve always wanted to visit Dubai anyway. Working and living there is a double bonus. I’m currently working with the International TEFL Academy staff to smooth the transition over.

It’s incredible to me the sheer amount of possibilities open to people of all ages to be able to earn a living by doing something that is enjoyable and life changing.

Having just recently taken the International TEFL Academy online course, I feel comfortable advising other students about the course.

It’s going to be a lot harder than you think or expect it will be and it will consume much more than the advised workload. I was spending far more than the assigned 30 hrs a week on my studies. In the final week of the four weeks in total, I clocked up over 60 hours. This is because the TEFL course offered through the International TEFL Academy has a set start and end date with coursework deadlines you must stick to. Many TEFL programs follow the study at your own pace system. International TEFL Academy doesn’t. Personally, for me, I preferred this method system because I procrastinate too easily and by having targets and deadlines I was forced to meet them or fail the course. Bearing this in mind, the content of the course and the workload is thorough and demanding. At first, you might feel like someone pushed you into the deep end of the pool, but you soon get the hang of the system, and if you put your mind to it the course structure they have created is doable. One thing I can guarantee is that you will complete the course with a huge knowledge of teaching English methodology. What I really liked about the course setup was that they provide you with experienced tutors who help you with any new and/or difficult tasks. This alleviates the stress and tension of taking a high pressured course such as this one. If you are absolutely serious about learning TEFL and don’t mind your life is dominated by TEFL for 4 straight weeks then I recommend the International TEFL Academy. The program is accredited too so you shouldn’t need to worry about finding work with the certification.

I took the International TEFL Academy course and overall, it did what it promised. The course content was solid, the structure was clear, and I did feel prepared to begin teaching afterward. In that sense, it delivered.

That said, I felt the price was a bit too high for what was offered. While the support and resources were decent, they didn’t really go above and beyond compared to other, more affordable TEFL programs. For the amount I paid, I expected more personalization or added value.

If you’re looking for a course with a strong reputation and don’t mind spending more, ITA might still be a good option. But if you’re on a budget, it’s worth comparing alternatives.

When I was looking to take a TEFL/TESL certification course, I had in the forefront of my mind that I wanted to take a course that included a teaching practice component.

I researched the web for weeks until I eventually narrowed my search down to The International TEFL Academy (ITA) and TEFL Online Pro. The combined course offered through The International TEFL Academy was almost $1,000 more expensive and I naively thought that because the course price was so much more expensive, I would be receiving so much more out of the course and its related services.

So, I went for the ITA TEFL 200-hour course with twenty hours of teaching practice- divided into 180 hours of online study and twenty hours of teaching practice.

The 180 hours of online tuition were good. I’m not really sure how they calculate there being 180 hours covered because I completed this section of the course way sooner than that.

The ITA TEFL website offers in-class teaching practice locations around the globe. Prague was my first choice as I’d read so many positive reviews online about their partner there in the city: The Language House. And I was given a clear impression when I enrolled in the ITA TEFL course that I could choose to take the teaching practice segment in Prague if I so wished to.

At the last minute, they cancelled my accommodation and course in Prague. No real explanation except to refer to their T+C. In the end, as it turned out, I taught my twenty classes to online-based students. I still got something out of the experience, but I felt deceived by the whole process.

Therefore, according to my calculations, I paid approx. $1,300 (including the certification fee) to take the exact same course that teflonlinepro.com offers for just $549. I checked and the certification awarded by these two schools is identical.

If I could roll back time, I should have just enrolled in the TEFL Online Pro 140-hour Hybrid course instead. I also read that they offer better student and graduate support.

So while I was generally happy with my ITA TEFL experience, I can’t say I would recommend it at the current price they are offering it. It’s overpriced and just not worth taking when there are better, more affordable TEFL TESL program options offering the same or similar courses and services.

Excellent experience with ITA. One of the best online courses I have ever taken. Online Instructors were hugely knowledgeable, easily available for assistance when needed, and responded with thoughtful answers to questions asked. The course is not easy, a lot of writing and deep grammar knowledge is required. Having worked as a teacher before, the online classes here reflect what you will find in the real world. I think it was money and time well spent.

I didn’t realize at the time that the cost of this course is much higher than other programs offering the same syllabus and services. I thought $700 was standard pricing but I’ve seen other courses go for less than $300. The other concern for me was that while it is a self-paced course, you do have a certain start and end date which you must meet. It’s essentially an onsite course delivered in the online form. There were also additional costs to have the certificate issued and additional costs for job placement services. The course operated on the Moodle system, which has a learning curve before you start to get a hang of its workings.

What I did like about this course was how deep it delved into the subject matter and I also appreciated the quick feedback responses from my tutor. Video tutorials are also part and parcel of the course and most of them were clear, but a couple appeared outdated and difficult to follow. I also thought that the test questions were relevant to the materials learned. The course is accredited, so that is an obvious bonus too.

I would recommend the course purely based on the quality of the tuition, but I’m not so sure it’s worth the high price tag.

I was pleased with my ITA online course study. It isn’t a self-paced study program like the other ones I saw promoted online. Instead, you have a certain time to start and complete the course. I liked this because it meant I couldn’t drag my feet and I was time-forced to complete everything on time, which is a good thing for someone like me who likes to procrastinate a lot.

I thought the lessons contained in the course were excellent at showing me, as a future teacher, how to present topics to students in a fun but informative way. There were also assignments where I needed to submit lesson plans and these were graded and suggestions for edits were provided. I always got quick replies back. This was important for me because I needed guidance, and the guidance was provided.

I also finished the online version of ITA (International TEFL Academy, operating out of Chicago IL). As someone with a master’s from a prestigious college and with no prior background in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, I found the course very easy and relatively useful. Like so many online (or in-person) classes, you get as much as you put in. I honestly did next to no research to compare programs and picked ITA because it appeared legit enough. I want to teach in South Korea sometime not so far into the distant future. I was hoping an ITA certificate would give me a bit more flexibility on where I ended up. I haven’t gotten a job yet (not for any fault from ITA, I’m still working full-time and don’t have the time yet to delve into research options) so I can’t comment on their after-sales pitch. I did have a friend though who did the same ITA course as me and his assessment was their job guidance is decent but still very self-driven (they’ll proofread your resume and give you a list of schools to look at, but not much else). I hope this review doesn’t put you off from taking the ITA online course. The course wasn’t bad, but it seems their after-sales services could up a notch or three.

I completed the TEFL program with this company in August 2023.

Positives of the program:

1. The course materials are excellent. They are written and presented on a high level and appear to cover all the core topics of TEFL teaching.
2. The course is supplemented by instructional videos. These segmented the course nicely and ensured that the course didn’t become too wordy or text-heavy.
3. The feedback I received on my assignments was excellent. Someone had clearly taken the time to read carefully through my coursework and the grade I received from each was fair. A few of my assignments also came with recommendations on how I could have improved my work. I learned a lot because of this honest, constructive feedback.
4. The course certificate looks the part.
5. ITA has an international jobs board for graduate students of the program. Although most of the job adverts have been in countries in which I’m not interested in teaching in, I have found a few leads for online teaching jobs.

Negatives of the program:

1. The price of the course is much higher than many others which I have looked at since. I’m not really sure why this is so when the course follows the same syllabus as many cheaper TEFL courses.
2. The big negative for me was the rigidity of the course timetable. I hadn’t realized there were courses you can take without a set start and end date. If you take this course, you have to start and end on a certain date and you have to submit your assignments on specific dates too.
3. It took me about a week to come to terms with the study platform (Moodle). It’s outdated software and there were glitches in the system from time to time.

Overall a bit of a mixed review from me. The course is fantastic, there is no debate there, but the rigidity of the course timetable will probably put a lot of people off from taking this course. If ITA could move away from using Moodle, I think they would dramatically improve the course experience for students in the program.

I’m going to rate the ITA TEFL program a 60% for student satisfaction.

Is ITA TEFL worth it? I am inclined to agree with previous ITA TEFL reviewers that this program offers the inflexible 4-week in-person course in an inflexible online format. It’s inflexible because even though it is online (which should mean flexibility) you still have fixed start and end dates; something you would expect from an onsite TEFL course, not an online TEFL course. I’m guessing they predominantly offered 4-week in-person courses and maybe because of 2020 they created an online version of the course with all the hallmarks of the existing course?

It’s not all doom and gloom though. I thought the course was brilliant. And the benefit of having fixed start and end dates for the course means that you get to share the same study timeline as other TEFL students; albeit virtually. It also means that the course tutor knows where everyone is at any given time during the course and can therefore respond quickly and precisely to questions. I’ve also had no obstacles using the certificate for my online tuition work.

I think that a 3-star review is fair because although the course and support are top-notch (it is) the high cost of the course and the rigid scheduling give it a significant disadvantage over other online TEFL-TESOL programs I’ve researched since. Overall, I probably wouldn’t recommend ITA TEFL to others. Is ITA TEFL worth it? No.

I purchased the ITA Intensive 4-Week Online TEFL Certification Course in August because I hoped it would open the doors for working online. Previously to taking the course I had been a student and had only ever had short-term working contracts – I thought that teaching English online would be a good fit for me. ITA claims on their website that you can take the course and find a teaching English job online within 4 weeks, but this wasn’t my experience at all. The course was ridiculously expensive and I stupidly thought that this would be a solid guarantee of quality. The course IS very good. But I found it unnecessarily complicated and clumsy. Really, you need to take a course to learn how to navigate this course. If you are thinking about taking the course with ITA then my advice, before you even enroll, is to go onto YouTube and look at the Moodle tutorials. ITA uses Moodle as their learning platform for the course. Because of Covid-19 it obviously wasn’t possible to take the in-person teaching practice in-person, so I taught my lessons online. I really enjoyed those classes but I think ITA should reduce the course fee, now that they are saving money on organizing in-person teaching practice placements. If I had known beforehand that the reason for such a high course fee was because they usually pay for your teaching practice hours overseas, instead of teaching them to students online, I definitely would have chosen a different program because the price of the course is way overpriced for what you receive. Especially when I compare the program to other 120-hour courses offering essentially the same course but for a much lower price. I did finish the course and I did receive the certification and I did receive some help finding work, but again I think that here ITA could definitely perform much better. I was just given a list of online schools. For the amount of money I paid, I was expecting much more help with finding teaching English work online.

I enrolled in the 11-week Online TEFL Certification course with the International TEFL Academy (ITA) because I was looking for a TEFL course that combined teaching methodology and teaching practice classes. ITA bills it as its best-selling TEFL course. For the purchase price of USD 1,299, it was the most expensive online TEFL course I found in my online research and I assumed the high price tag would mean a high-quality TEFL course.

Unlike most other online TEFL courses, the one offered by ITA has specific start and finish dates. I felt uneasy committing to a specific time slot, but, on the other hand, I figured it would push me and I would be motivated to complete the course.

If I were choosing again, I wouldn’t choose an online TEFL course with specific start and end dates.

I would choose one that is self-paced and one that you can study when you have the time.

The course was OK.

There was a sense of camaraderie among the other students on the course in the first week, but that soon waned as some students dropped out and others became stressed trying to meet the constant coursework deadlines.

All of my teaching practice lessons were taught teaching students online.

I didn’t mind this, but a lot of my students were used to the grind of meeting new TEFL students each month. Some were enthusiastic, and some were downright rude and bored.

I looked at other combined TEFL options and noticed a disparity in course prices.

TEFL Online Pro’s Hybrid course, for example, is about a third the cost of ITA’s and at the end of the course, you get a Fully Accredited TEFL TESOL certificate through either program.

A lot of hot air and hype really. If you are looking for a TEFL course that feels like it’s run by a group of fraternity students then this is the right one for you. Yes, they are one of the larger organizations. Yes, their adverts are pasted all over the web. Yes, they try to put forward an image of being part of a cool, hipster TEFL crowd. The course though is at best mediocre, and I definitely felt misled regarding how much support would be offered to me at the end of the course. Because they are so huge, don’t expect more than an auto-reply when you ask for help with finding work. It ticked some of my boxes, but in other areas fell far short. I’m sure there are better options out there.

International TEFL Academy ITA experience was OK. Not great. Not terrible either.

Positives of the course were mainly because of the actual course. It’s a quality product and I didn’t find it difficult to navigate through. I read a review where someone said you might as well just buy a TEFL book instead of taking this course. I completely disagree with that statement. the course does read like a textbook in places but offers so much more in terms of how the content is presented. I learned a heap about presenting grammar and language via the medium of games and other activities. you can’t get this level of learning from a book. If I were grading it as a stand-alone course, I’d give it a maximum of 5 stars.

What I thought were negatives of the course have been shared by other International TEFL Academy ITA reviewers on Trusted TEFL Reviews. Student support wasn’t anywhere near the level promised. You do experience full-on support when you are being led to pay for the course but then it falls off a cliff. I was also nickel-and-dimed for course extensions and certification fees. When they also wanted payment for helping me develop my resume and for job placement services I just stopped contacting them and decided to go it alone.

The overall conclusion of my time spent on the International TEFL Academy ITA certification course is that I learned a lot about TEFL (big thumbs up) and I also learned that I should have chosen a TEFL program that offered more in the way of student support. I think ITA TEFL is too large an organization and it shows (big thumbs down).
