It covers lots of ground and I learned more than I was expecting. However, there were some issues. The quality begins to taper off around the middle of the course. It felt like the person writing the course lost the enthusiasm to continue on the same level and it shows. This was further noticeable by the needless spelling mistakes and the grammar errors I picked up on. You can call me nit-picky, but I think that a course intended for people hoping to go into EFL teaching should be without these failings. It also took a long time to receive any feedback on my coursework. When the feedback came, it was subpar at best. I don’t think my tutor read my submissions. More realistic is that they simply emailed me back a template response.

Despite these shortcomings, I passed the course and received my TEFL certificate much quicker than I had expected – expectations based on some of the previous reviews of this program on TTR. The hard-copy certificate is still on my bedroom wall as I’ve only ever used the electronic version for job interviews, etc. The certificate looks professional and authentic and has served its purpose so far.

Expensive, but worth it. I couldn’t have afforded the course myself, so I asked a generous family member to pony up the money for me. The course cost, including the certification fees, was north of $1,000. It didn’t seem they have so many students on their courses because I often had instant replies to my questions and my course coordinator was there for me throughout the day. It’s an excellent program and one I would recommend to people who have the right budget, or a generous relative.

TEFL costs.

I didn’t realize at the time that the cost of this course is much higher than other programs offering the same syllabus and services. I thought $700 was standard pricing but I’ve seen other courses go for less than $300. The other concern for me was that while it is a self-paced course, you do have a certain start and end date which you must meet. It’s essentially an onsite course delivered in the online form. There were also additional costs to have the certificate issued and additional costs for job placement services. The course operated on the Moodle system, which has a learning curve before you start to get a hang of its workings.

What I did like about this course was how deep it delved into the subject matter and I also appreciated the quick feedback responses from my tutor. Video tutorials are also part and parcel of the course and most of them were clear, but a couple appeared outdated and difficult to follow. I also thought that the test questions were relevant to the materials learned. The course is accredited, so that is an obvious bonus too.

I would recommend the course purely based on the quality of the tuition, but I’m not so sure it’s worth the high price tag.

The school is a business above all else. The policies they choose to bend or break are set to advantage the enrollment interests of the school. My advice when enrolling with Premier TEFL is to ask lots of questions and keep a copy of all communication. This should protect you against the tendency of this school to ask for extra payments here and there as you progress through the course and certification process. Having said that, the course provides a wealth of factual knowledge and my tutor was accessible for further discussion. A challenge in truly preparing students for the field of teaching English is providing a realistic understanding of the classroom skills required for the job, and the Premier TEFL course did an adequate job of preparing me for teaching in a classroom. I don’t think any TEFL course will fit enough in to cover absolutely everything you’ll need in terms of preparation for life as an English teacher, but this course had a pretty good go at it.
