I really enjoyed the My TEFL program. It is user-friendly. After about 3 weeks the certificate arrives and you’re all done. After finishing the course, they asked where I was interested in teaching. I couldn’t get a teaching position in Japan, where I wanted to go, because I don’t have a degree, but they were able to provide me with European teaching English job options, and I’ve accepted a position in Prague, where I’ll be starting in January. Taking this course has really opened my eyes to what makes a good/bad teacher. I certainly feel more prepared now, and I am very pleased I chose this course to study TEFL.

When I was in the process of choosing an international Tefl/Tesol online school to go with I naturally began searching for reviews. MyTefl was one of the companies which came up time and time again in organic Google searches and I began reading how completely amazing this company is and how many completely satisfied graduates they have teaching around the world.

I must admit, I became horse blinkered and I began to want to be like one of these successful graduates which had dedicated their time online to thanking this awesome school for their experience.

And then the penny dropped. Soon after I paid and started the MyTefl course, which incidentally was their 120-Hour Online TEFL course.

I don’t want to write the course content and course support was terrible because it wasn’t terrible. It just wasn’t that good and it was when I was coming to the end of the course that I began to take a deeper look into the reviews that had convinced me to take this course it was a bit like a movie twist. I realized that MyTefl runs a few of the review websites which they only feature on and there are also lots of websites set up by graduates of their course who are part of their affiliate program. It seems from the motivation levels of some of these people that they would sell their own Grandma a MyTefl course in order to earn their commission.

Of course, I understand we live in a capitalist economy and there is nothing wrong with making money. But I think it raises difficult questions, such as the ones I began asking myself when a company pays its graduates a commission for finding new recruits, and those graduates start-up websites with glowing reviews in order to entice new students in. It just feels all wrong to me.

I’m not saying don’t take a MyTefl course. It was OK. But I definitely didn’t receive any sort of level of services like the ones described on their school website or described by the many graduates who are listed on reviews sites they run or sites the graduates have set up themselves.

I was all-around pretty satisfied with the overall MyTEFL Online certification course experience. I signed up with a discount code, slashing the price of the course and making this a very affordable way of becoming TEFL certified. I also liked how they try and make a difference by making company donations to charities around the world. At least that’s what they write on their company website, so I guess it must be true. I also liked the fact that MyTEFL offers internships in places like Thailand because this contributed to the overall impression that MyTEFL will help you find teaching work. I don’t know when I will get to use my MyTEFL certificate, but when I do I’m sure I’ll have no problems getting work. Overall a positive experience and one I would do again.

The whole process of searching for an e-learning tefl course to take was time-consuming as there are so many schools and so many course options. After a few weeks, I was able to narrow the filter of my search criteria and I began searching for courses that offered 120-hour study, international job guidance, and positive feedback from program graduates. I chose MyTEFL based on its program ticking all 3 criteria.

I must write that I thought the communication with the school was good and that they answered most of my questions quickly and informatively. Access to the course was provided as soon as I made my tefl course purchase and the login area had no bugs or anything like that.

The course though is definitely not 120 hours. I could have completed it in 24 hours if I felt inclined to. And the course content was laughable. My sister could have taken it and passed. And she is 11.

Also, very vague job guidance support at the end of it.

Now, the main reason I chose MyTEFL to take my online TEFL certification was because of the many positive reviews listed on the net. But recently I read on TrustedTEFLReviews that some online TEFL programs adopt the affiliates marketing model and I can clearly see now that MyTEFL does too. That 40% discount I received when I signed up? That would have been commission money paid from MyTEFL to the graduate who convinced me to go for it and sign up for MyTEFL.

I’m sure MyTEFL isn’t the worst course out there but readers do need to be warned that they do, in my opinion, employ dubious marketing tactics to sell their courses. I can see now that I shouldn’t have been fooled so easily by some of the glowing reviews and testimonials I found on the net of MyTEFL’s online TEFL certification course program.

I did pass the course and it did help me to get a job in the field, but it wasn’t the course or after-course support experience I was led to believe it was going to be. In the future, I won’t be fooled by raving reviews associated with a promo code.
