Expensive, but worth it. I couldn’t have afforded the course myself, so I asked a generous family member to pony up the money for me. The course cost, including the certification fees, was north of $1,000. It didn’t seem they have so many students on their courses because I often had instant replies to my questions and my course coordinator was there for me throughout the day. It’s an excellent program and one I would recommend to people who have the right budget, or a generous relative.

I always had to take a TEFL course high up on my To-Do list, but just never got around to it. The right time never presented itself, and I’m a procrastinator by nature Towards the end of last year, I got laid off from my work and this gave me the time to be able to focus on the 4-week online TEFL. Well, the course took me 5 weeks, but I read online that 4 is average. I chose to take this teaching English qualification course with the University of Toronto TEFL for a couple of reasons: I live in Toronto, and I wasn’t paying for the course myself so I was able to afford to take the most expensive online TEFL course I could find.

Loved the course. It starts nice and easy and progressively gets more intensive as you clock up the module numbers. As a native English speaker, I was taken aback by how much new information I was learning in the course about my language. Before taking the TEFL, I was considering whether to apply for teaching jobs without the TEFL training and just wing it as I went. Now that I have taken the course, I would urge people not to skimp on the TEFL training. Without it, I would be completely lost in knowing what is required of English teachers. There is so much to learn that I feel sorry for people who get a job without taking a TEFL course because they sure are going to have a year or more of failing in front of their students. So yeah, take a TEFL class before you think about teaching English as a temporary, or long-term profession.

To conclude: I recommend the University of Toronto TEFL course online.

My main reason for choosing the UoT TEFL course was that I live in the Toronto area and it was the only TEFL provider I could find which was based in the city. Or, maybe the only one I could be certain of was based in a brick-and-mortar Toronto city location. Compared with a lot of these other TEFL courses offering tuition online, UoT is up there with the price tag. But (and I see this is a general trend from other reviews) I wasn’t paying for the course myself, so with basically a blank checkbook I signed up for their online course version of their in-class TEFL courses Some reviews have complained of absent student feedback and shoddy customer service. I never experienced this. Each work assignment was marked and graded in good time and came with informative feedback. The course went deep into the materials (something I valued). From an academic institute with an international name for quality education, I wasn’t surprised by this high level of tuition. The school also provided me with an online tutor, who answered my questions well. I think taking a TEFL course without guidance is a bit like paddling a canoe down rapids without a paddle. So if you choose UoT TEFL because of this review then great. If it doesn’t convince you (likely because of the high introduction fees) then my advice is to choose a provider that offers the online tutor course service. Otherwise, you will find yourself up the river without a reliable navigation tool. I’ve had no problems at all using the certification since graduating. Therefore, I think you know why I recommend (if you have the $$$$ available) taking the TEFL with UoT TEFL.

Course content not only covers how to teach English but also how to manage students and how to cope with difficulties in the classroom. This classroom management is bound to come in handy in the future as I’m sure not all my future students will be as well-behaved as the ones I’m currently teaching. On the whole, I find language students to be well-behaved and motivated. Definitely, be a completely different experience if you have ever taught in the state school system. I haven’t but I’ve read horror stories from teachers who spend most of their class time disciplining students. ESL is different because most students are paying for the lessons and have a solid motivation to progress.

I really liked this course and I really like teaching ESL. Teaching ESL gives you a real sense of making improvements in the lives of your students. There are of course a few bad apples but generally teaching ESL is a cakewalk. I thought the ontesol course prepared me for most situations I have and will experience as an ESL teacher.

Very good course. Good variety of information and clearly presented. There is an emphasis on engaging the student via detailed text and audio and video. The audio is clear and the videos are up to date. I was also impressed with the access given to their alumni network because I was able to make use of this in asking questions about which aspects of the course mattered the most for when I would begin teaching. A good example was the module on Phonics. I understood the importance of learning the different sounds. However, the feedback I received from graduates of the course-related back to me that they hardly ever made use of phonics in class.

The grading system is meticulous and fair and notes were added to my assignments when mistakes were made. There were also notes of encouragement when I excelled

Toronto TEFL OISE has partnered up with Teach Away and it’s with this company that you receive help with finding work. They have a wide range of job offers in any given week- online and overseas job positions.

I recommend this program for quality TESL training with great support and access to a wide network of past student feedback. With a certificate from this company, it shouldn’t be difficult to find well-paid quality teaching work either online or abroad.

Teach English Abroad. I escaped the 9 to 5 job treadmill.

Probably like many of you reading this, I was stuck in a job where I was paid too little and where too much was expected of me. The final straw came when a promotion was up for grabs and where I was a natural choice. It was given to another employee who had a family connection with the manager. That was it, I told myself. I was sick of working for relative peanuts and feeling that I wasn’t really going anywhere.

I became a member of many earn money online Facebook groups (none of them proved fruitful in any way) and then I became attracted to the idea of the travel and work combo. After spending weeks in front of my screen, I came across this teaching English overseas opportunity and it seemed like the perfect way to escape the 9 to 5 job treadmill.

As a (proud) Canadian, I wanted to take my TEFL through a Canadian company. ICAL was one of the companies which caught my attention, and after some further research, I paid for their 120-hour course and started their online teacher training course.

I was actually surprised by how straightforward the course was. It’s explained extremely well. OK, some of the units demand more brain power than others, but overall I would say this is a course that most Canadians can pass without any teaching experience.

A month later, I booked a ticket to Bali. A few weeks after that, I moved on to Jakarta. Bali is beautiful, but the teacher market there is saturated. I taught in Jakarta for a year and then did another couple of semesters teaching in Surabaya, where there are endless teaching opportunities and where the air quality is much cleaner than in the capital.

I met my future wife while I was teaching in Surabaya.

We moved back a few years ago to set up an online teaching business. We are still going strong.

If you want out of the boring 9 to 5, take an online TEFL course and redefine your professional career. It takes courage but pays back many times over. Freedom is not free, you still need to work your socks off, but it’s worth it in the end.

I’m so pleased that I found this review’s website before I made my final online TEFL course decision. On Reddit and on some forums there was a lot of whining about how the course is so expensive and that it’s only expensive because it carries the name of the University of Toronto. Yes, it is costly because it carries the name of the university, which btw is also prominently listed on the certificate, but this course is more than just having an affiliation with the university. To begin with, there are so many scams out there and this program is definitely no scam. Secondly, the course is wonderfully presented. I covered so much teaching ground that by the end I was really surprised at how much teaching theory had sunk in. The lesson plans which you have to submit are very helpful—the feedback given is likewise helpful. So yes, it is the most expensive course, and yes it does cost a bit more because of their university connection, but the price is more costly also because of the high-quality tuition and feedback. I always felt like I was in a safe pair of hands during the course, and that I was being shown the correct way to teach. The after-course support has been very helpful too. They work with Teach Away, a Toronto employment agency specializing in TEFL jobs abroad, and they helped me decide where I wanted to spend my first teaching year overseas. A highly recommended program!

Everything was excellent!

I chose to take my Online TEFL through the University of Toronto (OISE UoT) TEFL program because of their consistently positive feedback on trusted TEFL reviews. They definitely deserve their high-ranked status!

1. The enrollment process was without complications. Because native speakers are eligible to take ESL teacher training courses, OISE UoT makes it easy to purchase the course and get cracking on the first module. My payment went through the first time and the amount paid was the amount that showed up on my bank statement.
2. The modules have been arranged very nicely and the course as a whole is very well designed. The sections follow a logical order; meaning you have a complete appreciation of the course all the way through. I read about some courses relying on a lot of fillers so as to stretch out the content, but never experienced this with the OISE UoT course.
3. There is always someone available should you have a question, or should you need some help with something. My tutor was great. There were a couple of times when I needed support and the help she gave enabled me to overcome those humps and progress through the course. Both times I required the support I received support within 48 hours of asking. I consider this excellent.
4. They are quick to issue your course certificate and when it arrives it prominently shows the University of Toronto name on it.
5. The course is taken through OISE UoT, and then you are passed over to their sister company for job placement/support. This company (Teach Away) is also located in the Toronto area. My experience with Teach Away was also very, very positive. I had a lot of questions for them and they got back to me on each one of them. I’m not ready to move abroad just yet, but when I do I’m certain I will be in good hands with the support team at Teach Away.

I recommend the OISE UoT TEFL program online.
