I made the mistake of trying to save money on a dirt cheap TEFL online course and I paid the price for it (a cheap, Groupon deal). I think I paid around 20 bucks for it. The course was an absolute joke. As was also how the certificate looked. No employer is going to take it seriously, and I feel inadequate to even start teaching because I didn’t learn very much with the very light on content materials aspect. So, money down the drain, and now I’m forced to choose another one to take. Be aware that I think they run their courses through different school names. One of them being TEFL Cambridge.

There were lots of positive reviews online, and the course was cheaper than a meal, in a central London pub, so I thought, “Why not?”. I fancied a change in life’s tempo and a period of 6 months or so teaching and traveling SE Asia would have been the tonic I needed. I paid for the course without really doing that much background research into the company (I think because it was so cheap) but if I had, I wouldn’t have spent a single Penny on this outfit. Everything looks normal, until just after you pay. You’re directed to an appallingly written course, with simple spelling mistakes galore, and you don’t learn anything. At the end of the course, I never received the promised course certificate. This was 3 months ago. Going to choose another company to go through. But first, I’ll check all the reviews here on trustedteflreviews.com

I recently took a truly terrible TEFL course through the TEFL Express certification program online and consider it my public duty to warn others not to fall for the same honey trap. It is a honey trap because the course is being offered for an incredibly cheap price but in this case, you get exactly what you pay for.

The course was very confusingly organized and was twice down when I was mid-study. Could have saved the fee and just bought a book instead as the materials were not presented well at all. Very poor. No feedback or any type of answer from them once my payment went through. Waited such a long time for my certificate, which eventually never came. I’ve now received my refund from Groupon which was processed without fuss.

This TEFL Express course came with an 82% discount and have taken the course, I can see why. The study format/interface was pretty poor at times and had a very budget feel to it. There wasn’t a whole load of feedback available. If I hadn’t paid so little I definitely would have demanded more from them. Not a terrible course but should be viewed as a TEFL taster rather than anything more serious than that. I mean, you won’t feel this qualification really leads you anywhere.

I really can’t fathom all the negative TEFL Express reviews. If you only pay £28 for a 120-hour TESOL course then you shouldn’t be expecting God’s gift to TEFL training. Yes, there were issues such as grammatical errors in the texts, and the lack of any real substantive course content, but for the money I paid, I doubt I could have got a better deal anywhere else. Yes, the support is atrocious and the resulting certificate looks like it might have been printed off my grandson’s bedroom HP printer. But again, for the price you need to realize that this course’s main value is that it will add value to your resume/CV and I thought it was a half-decent introduction to TEFL. A good refresher course if you like. Yes, the 120-hour advanced certificate program could easily be completed in 24 hours if you felt the need to, and yes, the course feels very monotonous as soon as you begin venturing into it, but I think this course is a good choice for anyone who simply needs a piece of paper which says they have completed a 120-hour international TEFL certification course. Just a shame that the certificate does look so cheesy. I understand that I can use a certificate like this one for most job application forms as my college degree will be doing the muscle work at the interview, but please TEFL Express. Please at least come up with an embossed certificate and not one that I would half expect to have the main Disney characters laminated on with it.

I want to bring to everyone’s attention the bad business practices of TEFL Express. Btw, they are also operating under the name “TEFL Cambridge”.

When I first saw their massive 88% course discount, it immediately grabbed my attention and as the Groupon reviews were OK it made me think I was getting a really sweet deal. The course supposedly retails at £399 and I received the £49 price. So yeah, a massive saving.

I received my login fine and logged in without issues.

The course was a joke and there were spelling mistakes throughout. It was also quite easy and not demanding at all.

But the clanger came at the course end when TEFL Cambridge, A.K.A TEFL Express, notified me that I had in fact failed overall and that to have the opportunity of passing the course I would need to pay for a course extension (which wasn’t heavily discounted.)

Before making payment, I took a look online to see whether anyone else had the same experience – there is no way I failed that ridiculously easy course – and lo and behold I did manage to find other people who went through the exact same experience as me.

Anyway, I managed to eventually receive a refund from Groupon and would advise anyone to avoid these types of super-cheap courses. Especially TEFL Express/TEFL Cambridge!

I would highly recommend my fellow teachers take this course because it covers everything which you need to know to get started with TEFL. This is a self-taught course and this is the reason for my 3-star appraisal. The course was easy to understand and straightforward and the materials were difficult enough to make me feel challenged but not too demanding as to deter me. I am now a certified teacher and that makes me feel proud of what I have accomplished. I’d definitely recommend taking this course.

TEFL Express certification review. Considering I only paid £28 for a £500 TEFL course, I’d say it would be very difficult not to give this program a good review. But of course, you get what you pay for, and had I paid the full course price then I would definitely have felt ridiculously overcharged.

Regarding the course itself, their study system is complicated and not very intuitive. A couple of times all my work was wiped clear because of some button I clicked which logically should have submitted my work. The course content wasn’t intellectually demanding and I didn’t think that it really prepared me satisfactorily for teaching English, but the basics were covered and for the price, it was a cheap TEFL taster course.

The course and after-course support simply weren’t there. But again, what do you expect for such a cheap course?

I would recommend this course for someone who just needs the TEFL certificate and who is able to persevere with the online course materials.

In all fairness, tefl express should receive 2.5 stars but there wasn’t an option on here for me to do that. 3 stars it is then.

Also, I saw a link to this site when I was up late and flicking through Quora and I haven’t recently finished the course. I completed my tefl express 160-hour (premier plus) tefl course a few years down the road now so my impressions might not necessarily be valid for a tefl express course in 2019. Either way, I have a bit of time on my hands and wanted to share my impressions with anyone out there thinking of purchasing the course I took.

I noticed some other reviewers on this site have been categorizing their reviews into pros and cons so that is what I am also going to do in my tefl express review.

Pros

1. This first one might be a potential negative for some but for me, it worked out to be a major positive. Basically, you get 75 days to complete the course from the moment your study time is activated and I think that although for some people this might throw up some serious issues down the line, from my perspective it helped motivate me to get on with the course and force me to get it done within a reasonable time frame. I had a mate who had 6 months to complete his and well, he spent 6 months on his course; taking his time until the last fortnight when he studied like a fiend so he wouldn’t have to pay an extension fee. I found my enthusiasm decreased after I’d paid, logged in and when the reality of what I was undertaking reality hit me, so this condensed time period was the perfect way to set a fire under my butt and make sure I didn’t lose focus.
2. Despite what others have said in their reviews of the tefl express program, I thought the course was pretty extensive and from time to time I still refer back to my original course notes when I can’t find a similar reference point online.
3. I’m teaching English overseas (Nagoya, Japan) and although my general impressions of tefl express were negative, I have met a few teachers who also went through the program so schools should recognize the tefl express name when it comes to applying for tefl jobs.

Cons

1. The big no-no for me was discovering my course offered in a Groupon deal with a significant discount. If I’d purchased through Groupon, I would have saved near on a couple of hundred bucks. Because of this business model, I felt cheated and began questioning the validity and reputation of tefl express.
2. There were multiple times when I couldn’t log on or when there was a bug in the system. This left me extremely frustrated because I set aside certain study times for myself and not being able to always study when I wanted to heap more pressure on that limited course limit.
3. I would say that I came away with a slightly bitter taste in my mouth after finding out at the end that I was required to make an additional payment for a hard copy of my certificate. Guess I should have read the small print. It was only about 30 bucks, but I felt taken advantage of. My certificate though did arrive in a matter of days and does look professional. Well, these were my impressions. As I wrote, I can’t vouch for how the school is run now as I took my tefl express online certification a few years back. Hope it helps! John.
