My beef with TEFL Fullcircle:

1. Once you pay you just don’t hear back from them unless they are contacting you to get you to pay more money for something.
2. I finished the 120 hours course in a day.
3. The course content is riddled with elementary grammar mistakes and elementary spelling mistakes.
4. The course format can’t be described as user-friendly. It worked fine on my laptop. When I tried working on both my tablet and phone the thing looked like it had crashed on me. Only choose this course if you plan on taking it with a laptop.
5. They charge for everything. Course extensions. Course certificate. Resume support. Job support. Notarization of the certificate. You name it, they will charge you for it.
6. The certificate arrived after two months and looks like a certificate template I could find online.

What I liked about TEFL Fullcircle:

1. I thought some of the content was good. It went into some detail.
2. It should be possible to use the certification to teach English online. *Should. I have all my fingers crossed on this one.

I finished the course in under a week, but I should have canceled and asked for my money back after the first module. This is a very disorganized school- the most disorganized course I have ever taken. The school office was impossible to get a hold of when things went south. And you WILL encounter technical issues when you study on this course. The course crashed on me only once, but it was when I was right in the middle of working on a module. Of course, being such a cheap course there is little to no support- you take one module at a time aimlessly without having a clue what your path is in this TEFL program. The Tefl Full Circle student services “coordinator” constantly makes mistakes, resulting in a breakdown in the communication chain. This meant that I didn’t have my certificate delivered properly to me for almost 6 months. If you choose to take this TEFL course, you will be able to use it to teach online; but if you are an organized person, everything about this school would drive you crazy. 2 stars are being very generous.

Common TEFL Scams come in various forms and from various sources. When people think of ‘TEFL Scam’ they usually think first of the scenario where they pay for a TEFL course and receive nothing in return. Thankfully, this is a rare occurrence. You are, however, much more likely to fall victim to a TEFL scam unwittingly- one that you may not discover a victim of until a few months or even a few years later.

This article will look at the most common TEFL Scams and will demonstrate how to avoid these easy-to-miss pitfalls. We will also be highlighting the Online TEFL certification course programs that are well-known in the TEFL industry for their shady business practices. i.e., TEFL programs to avoid.

At the end of this article, we list the Online TEFL/TESOL certification course programs that we recommend taking if you are having a hard time deciding on which course to take.

1. Common TEFL Scams – Fake Reviews.

Fake customer reviews are a huge issue across the board for most industries and the world of TEFL is no different. The fakers have been getting more and more sophisticated and it can now be very difficult to distinguish real reviews from fake reviews.

Let’s take a look at one of the worst fake reviews offenders: The TEFL Academy.

The TEFL Academy (TTA) used to be a well-respected Online TEFL TESOL course provider, before 2021, until they brought in a new CEO: Thomas Gibbons. Since Thomas’s appointment, Trusted TEFL Reviews (TTR) has witnessed a substantial overnight increase in “customer reviews” for TTA.

One only needs to look at TTA’s customer reviews on Reviews.io, Trust Pilot, and Hello Peter, to ascertain that something isn’t quite right with the sheer number of 5-star glowing reviews being received all at once for this program, as well as on its Facebook (Meta) page.

How can we be certain that TTA is publishing fake reviews?

Soon after Thomas’s new appointment as CEO at TTA, TTR suddenly began receiving a lot of reviews all at once for TTA’s listing. In one day, if my memory serves me correctly, we received just over 20 reviews for the TEFL Academy program.

Out of those 20 reviews, only four were found to possibly come from a real reviewer. Out of those four, no one returned our email when we requested proof of course enrollment.

It was then that we suddenly stopped receiving so many reviews for this program- until March of this year that is.

In March of 2021, TTR received yet another suspicious TTA review, stuffed with a lot of marketing keywords. The review was submitted by one of their Brand Ambassadors, masquerading as a recently-graduated TTA TEFL student – Caitriona McTiernan.

What does a TEFL Academy Brand Ambassador do? As far as we can gather, it is their job to promote TTA’s courses. In return for their hard work and diligence, they earn a 20% affiliate commission on every TEFL Academy course that is purchased via their recommendation.

TTA’s Brand Ambassadors have demonstrated that they are capable of seriously stretching the truth and can write absolutely anything, without accountability, to earn a juicy 20% affiliate commission fee on every TTA course referral.

And Caitriona earns a ton of money by promoting The TEFL Academy – a UK/Ireland-based TEFL school that rips its customers off through false advertising and likewise false claims.

But, hey, it pays for her trips abroad and I guess she somehow inner justifies the whole shebang. Somehow. I, for one, couldn’t. And neither, I’m assuming, could you.

More about affiliate commissions is in section 2 of this article.

We consider the blatant faking of customer reviews to be a serious red flag.

Whenever we come across examples of this, we always expose the company or individuals behind the fake reviews- as we have done so regarding The TEFL Academy:

Incidentally, the path of least resistance for these fake review scammers, when their review is denied publication, is sometimes to claim that Trusted TEFL Reviews is biased. Invariably, the found-out fake reviewer will claim that TTR is owned by such and such a TEFL program- a claim designed to reduce the credibility of TTR and reduce the credibility of them having been exposed as a fake reviewer.

If the TEFL program that they are reviewing tends to receive poor reviews, as The TEFL Academy does, the fake reviewer will also be trying to reduce the credibility of those verified customers’ poor reviews.

Claims made that Trusted TEFL Reviews is a biased reviews website, owned and run by any of the TEFL reviews websites listed on Trusted TEFL Reviews, is a clear sign that the person or company making the claims is trying to cover something up.

Such claims always lead back to an individual representing a TEFL company, or a TEFL company acting in its self-interests. In both cases, the hidden agenda behind such claims stems from a TEFL program with a poor reputation- a poor reputation that they are trying to cover up and conceal from future paying customers.

If an Online TEFL/TESOL certification program has a low rating on Trusted TEFL Reviews, it means that they are doing something wrong when it comes to the product it offers and how it treats its customers.

Other programs that have also followed this path of least resistance line of attack, just as The TEFL Academy has done so, are Ian Patrick Leahy from ESLinsider TEFL, Henry Harvin Education, ITTT TEFL, MyTEFL, TEFL Fullcircle, and World TESOL Academy.

What else do these fake-review Online TEFL/TESOL programs have in common?

They all offer unaccredited courses, despite almost all of them claiming to be “accredited” and “international”.

Where is a good source for real TEFL student reviews?

Facebook tends to be a very good source because it has at least some moderation systems put in place, whereby they are able, over time, to delete suspect reviews.

2. Common TEFL Scams – Affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is another major spanner in the works when it comes to the perpetuation of common TEFL scams.

The TEFL course affiliates marketing scam works like this:

Person ‘A’ wants to earn money online. They realize that they can earn money online by recommending a TEFL program and earning a commission on every course purchase that they initiate. The commission rate is usually around 20% of the total course purchase price. Person ‘A’, who has never taken the TEFL course, begins blogging about that TEFL course- claiming that they purchased and took the course, that it was amazing, and that others should also purchase and take the course.

The internet is rife with travel blogs that are signed up to TEFL course affiliate programs.

You can usually recognize them because they have unique names, such as ‘Goats On The Road’, ‘Roaming Vegans’, ‘Two Monkeys Travel Group’, etc.

Some TEFL programs, such as The TEFL Academy, have gone a step further by employing their own ‘brand ambassadors’ to affiliate market their courses for them. In some cases, the brand ambassador will be a graduate of the program, but in other cases, the brand ambassador will have no first-hand knowledge of the course.

Either way, when you are being paid to write only positive things about a product/service because you get to gain from your content, it is highly unlikely that you will be objective in your coverage of the product/service for which you are writing.

Not all TEFL programs have an affiliate marketing program, but the ones that do tend to be programs that you would do best to avoid. MyTEFL and The TEFL Academy are two unaccredited Online TEFL TESOL certification programs that rely heavily on their affiliates’ minions for new paying customers.

Of further concern is that some of the most well-known TEFL course reviews websites, travel abroad/overseas websites, and work abroad/overseas websites are knee-deep in the affiliate’s marketing model- earning an affiliate’s marketing income from TEFL course sales of the programs that they have listed, and which they accept reviews of on their sites.

Affiliate marketing is one of the common TEFL scams. You should most certainly take anything written by an affiliate marketer with extreme skepticism because they often, if not always, have a hidden agenda behind the content that they have written.

3. Common TEFL Scams – Accreditation.

TEFL accreditation is another area in which there lurk Common TEFL Scams.

Because there is not one central accreditation body for Online TEFL TESOL certification courses, there are, instead, a handful of accreditation bodies that fully accredited Online TEFL TESOL certification course programs.

The accreditation bodies authorized to provide Fully Accredited status to Online TEFL TESOL certification course programs:

ACCET – Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training | https://accet.org/

ACTEFLC – Accreditation Council for Teaching English as a Foreign Language Courses | https://www.acteflc.com/

Online TEFL courses that are directly accredited by the Ministry of Education also enjoy Fully Accredited status.

There are, of course, other “accreditation awarding institutions” out there, such as Accreditat, OTTSA, and ITEFLAC, but they are fake accreditation websites.

MyTEFL started with OTTSA accreditation. As has ITTT TEFL.

About six months after we ran the OTTSA accreditation scam article, MyTEFL also magically gained “accreditation” from ITEFLAC – a website that suspiciously appears to have been created by MyTEFL. MyTEFL is now also “accredited” by the International Council for Online Educational Standards (ICOES). ICOES also accredits such bastions of international education including, but not limited to, ‘Permanent Jewelry Bestie’ and ‘spray tan class’.

MyTEFL and ITTT TEFL issue their course certificates out of Thailand. OTTSA was created by a newbie English teacher, Simon Godwin, who lives in Thailand.

OTTSA is a creation of MyTEFL and ITTT TEFL.

ITEFLAC is so obviously a scam. You only have to look at the website to see that it is a fake accreditation website. Could ITEFLAC also have been created by MyTEFL? Possibly. We definitely wouldn’t put it past them.

The TEFL Academy also lies about its accreditation claims.

On the TTA website, it is claimed that The TEFL Academy is accredited by Ofqual, QUALIFI, DEAC, and AQC.

These are external bodies authorized to regulate education programs, not accredit them.

The TEFL Academy (TTA) is, therefore, heavily regulated, but is not accredited at all.

The lesson to be learned here is that when choosing which Online TEFL TESOL certification course to take, choose a course that is fully accredited by one of the (top) above-mentioned reputable international accreditation bodies.

4. Common TEFL Scams – The ‘That TEFL Course is a scam or fraud’ scam.

When I traveled in India, one of the stand-out annoyances was how whenever I would arrive in a new place, with my mind made up on where I was going to sleep for the night, I was always told by random strangers on the train or bus stations that the place where I had chosen to stay was “bad”, “no longer in business”, or “a scam”.

This would then follow with a recommendation of their own, for a far better place where I should sleep instead.

In 100% of these run-ins with “helpful” strangers, not once was my intended accommodation as was described by them.

This is also a Common TEFL Scam.

Some Online TEFL TESOL programs spend vast amounts of their time spreading fake information online about their competitors, to try and convince people to take their course program instead.

A clear winner in this category is Ian Patrick Leahy, from ESLinsider TEFL.

Ian has carved out a specific niche for himself, whereby he churns out pages and pages of misdirected online content- all with the sole intention of selling more of his unaccredited ESLinsider TEFL /TEKA courses.

In other words, Ian Patrick Leahy is a serial online spammer.

Ian and his ESLinsider TEFL course have been banned from Facebook for this excessive spamming and excessive spreading of false information.

Pick and choose any Online TEFL/TESOL certification program – Ian will have written some trash online about it at some time, on his school blog or YouTube channel.

The major irony is that Ian Leahy from ESLinsider TEFL has been directly linked with the imprisonment of English teachers in China.

Just Google ‘ESLinsider Scams Asia’ and you discover a treasure trove of complaints and warnings.

Ian was not only selling his unaccredited TEFL/TEKA course to unsuspecting people. He was also selling fake college diplomas. The Chinese authorities found out and arrested and then deported anyone they found to have bought a fake college diploma from Ian Leahy/ESLinsider.

There are now warnings issued by various reputable sources – all advising people not to take one of Ian’s ESLinsider TEFL/TEKA courses because if they do, they won’t be eligible for a work visa and might be detained due to association with Ian’s TEFL course.

In addition to this bombshell, it has recently come to light that Ian Leahy has been accused, by his verified customers, of having withdrawn money from their debit and credit cards without prior authorization and for purchases not related to TEFL.

Ian Patrick Leahy claims to be a ‘TEFL expert’, an ‘ESL insider’, but has little knowledge of TEFL – demonstrated in one of his YouTube videos, where a user comments on him not knowing the first thing about teaching Phonetics.

We often receive emails, asking whether so and so’s Online TEFL course program is legit or not, and citing concerns about something they have read online that points to the opposite conclusion.

Our advice is always the same.

Place importance on verified customer feedback. Don’t place importance on content that is not from a verified customer source.

5. Common TEFL Scams – Dirt-cheap TEFL courses.

If you pay peanuts then you get monkeys, and if you buy an Online TEFL TESOL certification course for peanuts then you will be setting yourself up for immediate failure and for becoming victim to the dirt-cheap Common TEFL Scams.

We do understand that money can be tight for some people, but there are some purchases in life that you don’t want to save on and compromise quality on.

A TEFL course is something you don’t want to make a huge saving on because there is always a reason behind that huge saving.

If you purchase a 120-hour Online TEFL TESOL certification course for under US$100, you can expect that course to be unaccredited and full of grammar and spelling errors. You can also expect that you will learn very little on the course and that your course certificate will look like a 5-year-old created it.

The dirt-cheap Online TEFL TESOL certification courses are also almost always not accepted by online/international employers, and you will likely discover down the path that your certificate won’t be accepted as a document for the work visa that will be essential for your teaching purposes.

Do yourself a favor and invest a little bit more and earn an internationally recognized TEFL TESOL certificate that will properly train you to teach English, and that will be accepted worldwide.

TEFL Fullcircle gets a bad rap online. I experienced the opposite.

If you want a course equivalent to the CELTA or Level 5, this course isn’t for you.

If you want a standard TEFL course to check the boxes for most TEFL employment options, this course is one I can recommend.

I’ve been using the certificate for my online teaching jobs since May and it’s served its purpose so far.

My plan is only to teach until the end of the year so why should I shell out $$$$ on a CELTA course? Made no sense to me.

The course interface is basic but easy to navigate. It took me a couple of days to finish it. So for me, it was a quick and painless way to get the TEFL certification and quickly start applying for online teaching jobs.

I haven’t worked out whether it is accredited. The theme hasn’t been brought up so far at any of my job interviews.

The 5-star rating I’ve added to this review represents my own experience of the TEFL Fullcircle course and the subsequent benefits of taking this course.

There were red flags for TEFL Full Circle when I saw it on Groupon for 39$.

After reading this, there should be signal fires because of the reality that you get what you pay for. Specifically, it leaves you without any feeling of preparedness to teach online or overseas.
I can’t promote TEFL Full Circle because I can’t stand behind a certificate program that has no lasting benefits for the teacher. But that’s not all. Here are more reasons why you should avoid this 39$ Groupon TEFL course.

The entire course is reading. It’s just chunks of text repeated over and over again. Plus, when you read through the material, it looks outdated with cheap stock photos of smiling kids.
Reading a wall of text doesn’t prepare you to teach in the classroom – without any interaction, you can’t measure your progress.
Instead, consider taking a reliable course like TEFL Online Pro, which gives you classroom teaching experience with their 140-Hour Hybrid course. You get constructive feedback from professional teachers on how to improve your lesson plans.
It doesn’t prepare you 100% for teaching in a classroom. That comes with time. At least, though, it gives you something to start with and see if you want to become a TEFL teacher.

You get what you pay for when it comes to job opportunities from TEFL Full Circle. They will take your money and run with it.
Meanwhile, other more reputable Online TEFL/TESOL course programs will stand by you every step of the way with lifetime job placement opportunities.
Because these companies not only care about your experience as a student, but they also care about your experience as a teacher. It’s about you increasing your opportunities for higher-paying jobs.
Take a TEFL course that will pay off in the long run. Not just the cheapest one you find at the spur of the moment.

It’s always recommended to take a 120-hour course because it’s the industry standard. Even though the TEFL Full Circle course says it’s 120 hours, it only takes about 12 hours to finish.
The first thing you’ll notice is that it’s unfinished with core content missing from modules. Plus, the whole course is riddled with grammar and spelling mistakes.
This is not the type of thing to inspire you with confidence while taking it. It’s also difficult to navigate and bookmark where you last left off.
The alternative? If you can sign up for an in-person course, I recommend 120-hour courses from TEFL Online Pro and OISE University of Toronto TEFL over TEFL Full Circle.

If you’re not challenging yourself, you’re not trying. The whole purpose of taking a course on anything is to challenge yourself.
It’s not about checking a box that you’re TEFL certified because some employers don’t even recognize TEFL Full Circle certification.
I don’t promote trash so this TEFL Full Circle review comes from my heart. Like all things in life, cheap items eventually end up costing you more.
If you need a legit TEFL certification program, then don’t pick this 39$ Groupon TEFL certification.
My advice is to avoid any of the dirt-cheap Online TEFL courses offered on Groupon.

Oh, and my last point is that Enjoy TEFL is owned by the same people who run TEFL Full Circle.

I thought the course was OK. One reviewer wrote that the school’s website is far better than the study part of the website and I have to agree. The course interface is somewhat clunky and not that user-friendly. This is a study-as-you-go online course and you are in it alone- meaning that there isn’t an online tutor to guide you through the course. There were some assignments that I had to complete and the feedback was a copy-and-paste reply. The course is cheap, but they charge an exorbitant amount for the certificate hard copy. On a more positive note, the course is good. I feel that I learned the basics of ESL teaching. The stand-out great thing about this course is how they approach teaching grammar. It would be easy to fall into the trap of making a module on teaching grammar boring, but the course delivered the information clearly and in a fun way with the use of various activities and examples. My advice to anyone considering this program though is to clarify in advance how much all the extra costs will set you back because it looks cheap at first, but ends up quite expensive by the end. the course is good though so if you don’t mind paying a bit more then this might be the right one for you.

I completely agree with the previous TEFL Full Circle reviewer that the program would be way better if they just communicated with their customers. Communication with the school is excellent. That is until you pay. The communication just ends once you’ve handed over your money. I tried contacting their office by email, and phone and then adding them on Skype, but I wasn’t successful. Fortunately for me, my payment went through fine and I didn’t need to contact them about this. Heaven knows though what I would have done if there had been a problem with my payment. I also agree that whilst the TEFL Full Circle website looks great and is a joy to browse through, the actual course interface is not user-friendly. It kept crashing on me and looks nothing like the website where they actually sell the course. Reminded me of a bit of a retro site from the 90s. I did think that the course materials were quite helpful and informative. It wasn’t as was advertised exactly, but I did learn something from this course. I can’t recommend this program because they don’t offer any customer support.

I completed the 160-hour TEFL course with Tefl full circle. The course in itself was fine but getting a certificate is nigh on impossible. I paid to have a certificate rather than downloading one, ( I’m not so sure that employers/ universities accept downloaded copies anyway). That was on 28 June and I am still, despite numerous emails and phone calls waiting. The last time I managed to speak to them, I received an email telling me that my certificate had been processed and would be despatched to me. That was on 12 August and I am still waiting! I do not know what has happened to this company but I would advise anyone thinking of using them to think again. It’s a waste of time and money if ultimately, you can’t get your certificate!

TEFL Full Circle was a deflating experience – largely because it is a very disorganized teacher training program. Why did I choose this company? They have an excellent website and most of the questions which I needed to answer were right there on their site. I then did a bit of digging around online and saw quite a few favorable reviews, so I made the decision to go with them for my TEFL training online.

I had a few problems paying for the course, but that was probably because I was paying for the course when abroad so my bank kept canceling the transaction. When the payment did go through I was able to begin right away. So far so good. The only problem was that the course interface was completely different from the TEFL Full Circle website. They really, really need to update it because it’s very cumbersome and I also counted quite a few spelling and grammar mistakes. This isn’t something I would expect from a company training people to teach English! The subject matter was good though, and this is the reason for this 2-star review. If the organization was better, and if the website study interface worked better, I would be giving 4, or even 5 stars.

There were also some issues with submitting work. Twice, I spent time completing an assignment, only to receive a message later that both hadn’t been received and that I must submit them again. Of course, I hadn’t saved my work because I didn’t think I needed to, so it was back on the drawing board again. Twice this happened to me. It was very, very frustrating!

This is a relatively decent choice if you need to get quickly qualified to teach English. I thought the course could have done with having a visual component instead of the total reliance on text-based learning. Perhaps this is something included in their longer 160-hour TEFL. With the 120-hour version though it is all about reading text and then answering quiz questions. The course covers most of the areas I would have thought needed covering in a course of this type. The learning interface got a bit clumsy for periods during the course. It’s a cheaper course than some others and it does show. TEFL Full Circle was OK.

Is TEFL Fullcircle Legit? More assistance with job-finding opportunities would have been appreciated.

In hindsight, one of the main issues I have with the TEFL Fullcircle online TEFL/TESOL certification course program is the pricing. If you order directly from the TEFL Fullcircle website, the price of the course is a bit hefty. If you order the TEFL Fullcircle course with a Groupon voucher (through Groupon) it takes a while before you actually begin the course because you need to go through the lengthy process of registering with Groupon as a third-party website which TEFL Fullcircle have chosen to offer their courses heavily discounted through. I think I paid $48 for my course and considering the fact that Groupon skims 50% off in commission fees, it does lead one to question the legitimacy of charging so much for this course without the Groupon voucher. I found TEFL Fullcircle by typing ‘cheap TEFL online’ into Google, but it would have been wiser, again in hindsight, if I had instead shelled out a bit more and paid for a course that provided more interaction and a much better learner experience. If you are just out for a piece of paper with the word ‘TEFL certificate’ written on it then why not do the TEFL Fullcircle course? But putting it mildly, you are likely not to finish the TEFL Fullcircle course with a sense of satisfaction that you are that much more knowledgeable in TEFL. They issue you the certificate (free of charge) up to 10 days from the date you finish the course, but badger you during that time to pay $20 for a sped-up delivery. I’d imagine most people pay the $20. I felt this was a bit underhanded by TEFL Fullcircle. To sum up: if you just want a piece of paper claiming you are a wizard in TEFL (despite not being one) then why not? If you are searching for a course that will sufficiently educate you in TEFL in an interactive way and continue to support you after you finish then this isn’t the right course for you and I’d recommend going with a different TEFL school.

I was initially attracted to the Tefl Full Circle program because of the school website, which is designed well and isn’t as cluttered as some other offers I saw during my research. The course that I took was online. It helped me to review some of the basics that I had forgotten in high school and taught me a lot about teaching, which is something I have never done before. The instruction was very intuitive. I had no problem getting onto the website and logging in and out. Thanks a lot, Tefl Full Circle for this opportunity!

Tefl Full Circle has a wonderful website and wonderful prices. Once you pay, you get access to a study area full of grammatical errors and difficult to navigate. A completely different impression from the one advertised on their home pages. At times was very frustrating. I don’t recommend Tefl Full Circle.

I have been a high school teacher for the majority of my professional life, and as I’m reaching the age where it is always a good idea to change careers, having money saved in the bank, TEFL is the next chapter of my life. I was disappointed though with the TEFL Full Circle TEFL offering. The course does not prepare you enough and I considered the syllabus to be a bit shabby around the edges. I did not mind the typos because, with any online material, these can’t always be escaped from. However, the course materials were not up to the standard with which I had anticipated.

I did have a tutor and she was sometimes helpful to a degree. But it felt as though she wasn’t TEFL trained herself (sorry tutor, it’s nothing personal).

I felt satisfied with the look and feel of the certificate but felt duped by their advertised employment abroad service that never materialized.

Despite the false advertising, my banker advised me that I probably wouldn’t be successful in retrieving the course fee because I had confirmed receipt of the certificate.

Does anyone here have any tips for a recruitment agency?
