Teaching English as a Second Language.

When I was looking to take a TEFL/TESL certification course, I had in the forefront of my mind that I wanted to take a course that included a teaching practice component.

I researched the web for weeks until I eventually narrowed my search down to The International TEFL Academy (ITA) and TEFL Online Pro. The combined course offered through The International TEFL Academy was almost $1,000 more expensive and I naively thought that because the course price was so much more expensive, I would be receiving so much more out of the course and its related services.

So, I went for the ITA TEFL 200-hour course with twenty hours of teaching practice- divided into 180 hours of online study and twenty hours of teaching practice.

The 180 hours of online tuition were good. I’m not really sure how they calculate there being 180 hours covered because I completed this section of the course way sooner than that.

The ITA TEFL website offers in-class teaching practice locations around the globe. Prague was my first choice as I’d read so many positive reviews online about their partner there in the city: The Language House. And I was given a clear impression when I enrolled in the ITA TEFL course that I could choose to take the teaching practice segment in Prague if I so wished to.

At the last minute, they cancelled my accommodation and course in Prague. No real explanation except to refer to their T+C. In the end, as it turned out, I taught my twenty classes to online-based students. I still got something out of the experience, but I felt deceived by the whole process.

Therefore, according to my calculations, I paid approx. $1,300 (including the certification fee) to take the exact same course that teflonlinepro.com offers for just $549. I checked and the certification awarded by these two schools is identical.

If I could roll back time, I should have just enrolled in the TEFL Online Pro 140-hour Hybrid course instead. I also read that they offer better student and graduate support.

So while I was generally happy with my ITA TEFL experience, I can’t say I would recommend it at the current price they are offering it. It’s overpriced and just not worth taking when there are better, more affordable TEFL TESL program options offering the same or similar courses and services.

I also finished the online version of ITA (International TEFL Academy, operating out of Chicago IL). As someone with a master’s from a prestigious college and with no prior background in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, I found the course very easy and relatively useful. Like so many online (or in-person) classes, you get as much as you put in. I honestly did next to no research to compare programs and picked ITA because it appeared legit enough. I want to teach in South Korea sometime not so far into the distant future. I was hoping an ITA certificate would give me a bit more flexibility on where I ended up. I haven’t gotten a job yet (not for any fault from ITA, I’m still working full-time and don’t have the time yet to delve into research options) so I can’t comment on their after-sales pitch. I did have a friend though who did the same ITA course as me and his assessment was their job guidance is decent but still very self-driven (they’ll proofread your resume and give you a list of schools to look at, but not much else). I hope this review doesn’t put you off from taking the ITA online course. The course wasn’t bad, but it seems their after-sales services could up a notch or three.

A lot of hot air and hype really. If you are looking for a TEFL course that feels like it’s run by a group of fraternity students then this is the right one for you. Yes, they are one of the larger organizations. Yes, their adverts are pasted all over the web. Yes, they try to put forward an image of being part of a cool, hipster TEFL crowd. The course though is at best mediocre, and I definitely felt misled regarding how much support would be offered to me at the end of the course. Because they are so huge, don’t expect more than an auto-reply when you ask for help with finding work. It ticked some of my boxes, but in other areas fell far short. I’m sure there are better options out there.

Haven’t taught for years so thought it was about time to get a proper qualification under my belt. I took the 120-hour course as a refresher and to get that all-important sheet of certificate paper. Even though I was/am familiar with TEFL, the course threw up a few surprises for me, which reinforced the wise decision I made to brush up on TEFL again. I did learn new teaching techniques and overall I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and feel of the course.

Chose the bare bolts 170-Hour Online TEFL Class.

Didn’t need any of their upgrades and weren’t pushed to purchase either.

I really liked the course and it improved my confidence in the subject material.

It costs a bit more than some and a lot more than others, but they help you find work and came over as genuinely caring people who are in this business not only for the money but for the progression of education too.

The only thing I would change would be the Moodle system of learning. But this is a minor, if at all complaint.

170-hour online TEFL certification class.

The TEFL certificate is essential for teaching English and the International TEFL Academy helped me make my dream of working and traveling overseas come true. The online platform materials and texts were easy to read and navigate and my online instructor provided supportive feedback. You have a week time limit to complete each module, which was beneficial to me as it pushed me to work otherwise you automatically fail the course. I most definitely didn’t pay $1,399 only to fail simply because of procrastination. The practicum does involve some research on your part, but having taught hours listed on my certificate was worth the extra work and extra money this course fee is priced at. The course also helps you with the process of finding teaching work so you don’t need to stress about that. They provide an excellent teaching abroad book that I found hugely informative and which ultimately proved fruitful in directing me in finding work overseas.
