Teaching English as a Second Language.

When I was looking to take a TEFL/TESL certification course, I had in the forefront of my mind that I wanted to take a course that included a teaching practice component.

I researched the web for weeks until I eventually narrowed my search down to The International TEFL Academy (ITA) and TEFL Online Pro. The combined course offered through The International TEFL Academy was almost $1,000 more expensive and I naively thought that because the course price was so much more expensive, I would be receiving so much more out of the course and its related services.

So, I went for the ITA TEFL 200-hour course with twenty hours of teaching practice- divided into 180 hours of online study and twenty hours of teaching practice.

The 180 hours of online tuition were good. I’m not really sure how they calculate there being 180 hours covered because I completed this section of the course way sooner than that.

The ITA TEFL website offers in-class teaching practice locations around the globe. Prague was my first choice as I’d read so many positive reviews online about their partner there in the city: The Language House. And I was given a clear impression when I enrolled in the ITA TEFL course that I could choose to take the teaching practice segment in Prague if I so wished to.

At the last minute, they cancelled my accommodation and course in Prague. No real explanation except to refer to their T+C. In the end, as it turned out, I taught my twenty classes to online-based students. I still got something out of the experience, but I felt deceived by the whole process.

Therefore, according to my calculations, I paid approx. $1,300 (including the certification fee) to take the exact same course that teflonlinepro.com offers for just $549. I checked and the certification awarded by these two schools is identical.

If I could roll back time, I should have just enrolled in the TEFL Online Pro 140-hour Hybrid course instead. I also read that they offer better student and graduate support.

So while I was generally happy with my ITA TEFL experience, I can’t say I would recommend it at the current price they are offering it. It’s overpriced and just not worth taking when there are better, more affordable TEFL TESL program options offering the same or similar courses and services.

I just got all done with finishing the TEFL Online Pro 140 hours Hybrid course and thought I would briefly share some of my main takes on this combined course program.

For starters, the total price of this course was far more reasonable than similar ones I had seen advertised online, and as far as I can tell this one is no different from those others. I paid in total $499 (with the $50 discount running at the time) and this was the final total. The price included all the training and the certification. Also included in the course were a recommendation letter, 24-hour-a-day online tutor support, and helpful support in finding teaching jobs online.

Because of the whole Covid situation, it wasn’t possible to teach the 20 hours physically in person. this didn’t matter though because I taught all 20 hours to students online and this worked out better for me anyway because I’m going to be teaching online. Perhaps later on I’ll teach abroad. At least I know that both options are possible when international borders begin opening up.

I tried thinking about whether there was anything I didn’t like about the Hybrid course, or TEFL Online Pro, but I honestly just couldn’t think of anything negative to write. For what you get for the price, and for what you can do with this certification, I just have to give TEFL Online Pro 5 stars.

140-Hour Hybrid Tesol from Tefl Online Pro.

The good things:

The possibility to study online to get the equivalent of a 4-week in-class TESOL certificate was a very attractive feature of this course. The first 120 hours are taught online, through the teflonlinepro.com website, and then the 20 teaching hours can be taught in-person or online. I chose the latter option. This is a pretty cool option if you want the credibility of an in-class TESOL certificate without having to travel anywhere to take it.

The course is very user-friendly and comes with a modern design. I was so happy after reading how some schools haven’t upgraded their learning systems for years and as a result, offer an outdated study interface. There were no problems with page crashes or technical issues or anything else like that either.

I was happy with the price. It’s not the cheapest and not the most expensive. Appears to sit somewhere in the middle. I’m curious if it would be cheaper to just take the TEFL Online Pro 120-hour course and then ask them to add the 20 teaching practice hours later. I never asked them about this so could be worth seeing whether it saves you a bit.

My online tutors (Paul and Sue) were fantastic. One of them was always available and their feedback was detailed and encouraging. The replies to my course messages were always answered quickly.

I received my certificate in the same week that I completed my 20 hours of teaching. Have used the certification numerous times over the past year and a bit. Never had any issues.

I still occasionally need to ask the TEFL Online Pro office for information and they still always answer quickly.

Room for improvement:

I could have done with learning a bit more about the different teaching cultures around the world. Teaching abroad is covered in one of the later modules of the course, but a suggestion for TEFL Online Pro would be to create an additional module and go through the teaching culture of each country where TEFL takes place.

Overall:

The 140-Hour Hybrid Tesol was great value for money and came with excellent support. I have used the certificate for online and in-class teaching jobs and never had a problem. Recommended!

I have 5 years of high school teaching experience…and the information that I learned in the tefl online pro program prepared me for the next level of teaching English as a second language abroad.

The biggest worry I had about taking an online tefl program was not having reliable, interactive support in case I ran into any troubles or wanted to ask any questions. The reviews of the tefl online pro courses on trustedteflreviews.com convinced me to choose this school because of their online tutor component and network of peer support.

I had Paul as my online tutor, and his replies to my questions were both really fast and helpful. Never had to wait longer than a day for a response, and feedback on my lesson plans was constructive/encouraging. The support that I received during my employment search was also top-notch.

I knew that I wouldn’t face any major hurdles in finding work, but I wasn’t sure where I wanted to teach, or what was required to settle in a foreign country. Paul and Sue provided me with expert advice and were instrumental in helping me make the move over to Busan, South Korea.

I’ve been teaching here for just over a year and it has been one of the best decisions I ever made. The hours can be long and the classes are sometimes demanding, but the money/lifestyle is very good. I’m not sure if I want to make a long-term career out of teaching English, but it’s certainly a path I plan to continue for the foreseeable future.

Due to the positive experience, I had during the course, and since then, I’ve rated the tefl online pro program the maximum score.

The sole reason for choosing the Hybrid (140-hour) course was the 20 practice hours component of the course; making this a super-affordable alternative to the residential course (in Paris) that I was considering taking at the time. As far as I can see, the only difference between taking this combined course and a residential one (apart from the significantly lower course price) was that I didn’t need to be stuck with a new group of people for 4 weeks, whom I might or might not have gotten on well with. I now have my international certification from tefl online pro which states the course modular components and the number of teaching practice hours taught. It is exactly the same certificate that I would have received had I spent a few thousand $ more and flown to France to take the course onsite, which I felt I was being pressurized into taking by the TEFL school in Paris which will remain anonymous. Don’t believe any onsite (residential) course school when they tell you that you must take one of their courses. It is BS. If you are looking for a TEFL course with teaching practice hours, which you can take anywhere you want to (I took mine at my local high school) then you should save your $$$$ and take a combined online/onsite course. You can’t go wrong with the tefl online pro-Hybrid (140 hours) course. I’m flying out to Lyon next week to begin my TEFL job. Awesome, right?!

This is a solid course from an established school and helped pave the way for me to start teaching English in Japan.

I decided to take their Hybrid Online/Onsite course, which meant 120 hours of methodology and 20 hours of practical teaching practice. I could have just gone with the (Professional) 120-hour course but I thought why not shell out a bit more and get some teaching under my belt first before heading overseas?

The methodology section of the course is very well designed and logically leads you through all the core TEFL components. In other words, through everything you need to have a very good overview of if you want to teach English. It covers things like grammar, phonetics, and lesson planning. Plus, you also get to cover a couple of lessons which focus on Business English and teaching children.

Personal tutor support comes with the course at no extra charge and although I hardly used the support, it was good to know it was there readily available should I have needed it.

TEFL Online Pro’s job guidance support is very, very, very good. I knew I wanted to teach in Japan but didn’t really know where to begin looking. They explained all the essentials to me and helped me through the whole process of finding a well-paid job in Nagoya. I didn’t want to experience such cold winters, so Nagoya turned out to be an excellent choice.

If you are thinking about doing your TEFL then Tefl Online Pro should be at the top of your list. Recommended!
