Is TEFL Academy Legit? The lessons are excellent, but the marking is very poor.

I want to start with what I liked about my TEFL Academy course.

It is a self-paced course, with some assistance along the way, and this was exactly what I was looking for in terms of flexibility and freedom of study. I was able to complete modules at home, in the park, anywhere where I had @, and where it was quiet enough for me to be able to focus properly. The course covers many areas of teaching English, and I liked how it was presented. I guess you could just steam through the course and finish it within a few days by not reading the texts and just answering the questions, but you would be missing out on a lot. As a caveat, though, I do need to add that this is the only online TEFL course that I have taken, so I can’t compare it with any others.

And what I didn’t like about my TEFL Academy course.

What did let the course down though was the feedback on the coursework. The feedback was copied and pasted material. At least it seemed obvious to me that it was. I felt demotivated by this because I hadn’t needed to work my butt off so much on them, thinking that a qualified moderator would fully read my work.

I recommend the course, but I don’t advise to take the coursework too seriously. As long as your lesson plan looks good enough, you will receive the same feedback that I received when I submitted mine.

As a final note, I can write that there wasn’t that much help with a job search, but I didn’t require this support anyway.

I recently took the TEFL through The TEFL Academy online program. It was a reasonably good course, with many good tips for using activities with students. I don’t think the course taught me all there is to know about TEFL, but I suppose no course can do this really in such a short time. The TEFL Academy sent me a school list for online teaching so I’m going to begin researching and try to find a teaching job online. I do wish there was more support after the course, but I guess you can’t expect so much from a TEFL course in this price range. I will be recommending The TEFL Academy if anyone asks. It didn’t blow me away, but it got the job done to a greater extent and that’s all that counts at the end of the day. I just hope I can find a job quickly because ideally, I want to start teaching at the start of January 2024. I just hope the certificate is recognized for the jobs that I plan to apply for because I have read that the program’s certificates are generally only recognized in certain countries and for certain online companies that are based in those countries. I guess it’s going to be a wait-and-see situation going forward. There do seem to be a lot of jobs available though – I had a quick look through a few TEFL job sites and was impressed with how popular teaching English online still is. Wish me luck!

TEFL costs.

I didn’t realize at the time that the cost of this course is much higher than other programs offering the same syllabus and services. I thought $700 was standard pricing but I’ve seen other courses go for less than $300. The other concern for me was that while it is a self-paced course, you do have a certain start and end date which you must meet. It’s essentially an onsite course delivered in the online form. There were also additional costs to have the certificate issued and additional costs for job placement services. The course operated on the Moodle system, which has a learning curve before you start to get a hang of its workings.

What I did like about this course was how deep it delved into the subject matter and I also appreciated the quick feedback responses from my tutor. Video tutorials are also part and parcel of the course and most of them were clear, but a couple appeared outdated and difficult to follow. I also thought that the test questions were relevant to the materials learned. The course is accredited, so that is an obvious bonus too.

I would recommend the course purely based on the quality of the tuition, but I’m not so sure it’s worth the high price tag.

Very satisfied. The course gave me a comprehensive overview of the resources required for TEFL, which is something I was completely unaware of before undertaking the course. It’s also accredited, so that was another big plus. I chose this particular course as a plan B really because my first choice had been The TEFL Academy but having read all the poor reviews I went with TEFL Institute of Ireland instead. Both are based out of the Republic of Ireland, which is where I hope to be teaching in 2025. This was my main reason for choosing a TEFL program based in Ireland. The studying aspect of the course was made interesting I thought by the inclusion of learner games, which helped make the course not seem like you were reading from a textbook. Helpful feedback was also provided and I had the impression that the school’s staff cared about their students’ development. I received the electronic certificate within a week of completing the course. I also think I read somewhere on the school’s website that they help with searching for TEFL work. I’ve already got my job confirmed. I’m just hoping this new variant doesn’t mess up those plans. I don’t normally write reviews but am happy to have written this one based on a very positive experience.
