I’m a person who likes to help others and when the chance to go volunteer to teach English to children in Cambodia presented itself, I literally jumped at the chance. It’s a bit of a shame that The TEFL Academy isn’t an internationally recognized accredited TEFL/TESOL certification course program because I would have liked to extend my trip by traveling around the region and earning a bit of money for future travels, but I can always take another TEFL course from a different company and then I’ll be able to do that too! I volunteered in a small village around 100km south of the capital Phnom Penh. It was one of the best times of my life and I met some great people, whom I still maintain contact with. We weren’t paid, but our board and lodgings were free. And the smiles on the faces of the children were priceless. I’d been told I would be teaching English, but when I arrived it soon became apparent that we’d be helping out with all the chores. Friday evenings were my favorite times because that’s when we put on a performance for the children. I play the guitar and other volunteers and the children chipped in with make-do musical instruments. And of course, singing! I planned on staying for two months but ended up staying for six months. If you ever get the chance to volunteer, I strongly recommend that you do it. Even if it’s just for a few months. Ask The TEFL Academy about which places they are sending volunteers out to and I’m sure they will be more than happy to assist. You just need to pay a volunteer fee to The TEFL Academy. This pays for them to place you in a volunteer facility. Mine was a family house turned into an orphanage and it was surrounded by rice paddy fields. The hardest thing about volunteering? Saying goodbye to the children when it’s time to leave. I’ll definitely be back, but this time I’m going to take an internationally accredited TEFL certificate, so I can then stay on indefinitely and earn my way around Southeast Asia.

I liked the flow of the course and I was able to squeeze it into my free time while I was working full-time. There isn’t a rigid timetable or anything like that so you can return to where you last left off whenever you feel like it. I wouldn’t say it is a difficult course, not really easy either- it hits a nice balance between the two. I chose to pay extra for their tutor support, although I now see that some TEFL programs offer this service for free as part of the course price. Response times from ITTT were overall pretty good and I never felt left out in the dark. I’ll be using my TEFL certificate later in the year when I hope to be able to travel abroad to volunteer to teach English in Thailand. My ITTT certificate was posted from Thailand so I’m hoping they can help me with a volunteer job placement over there. Even if you are just going to volunteer to teach, I would still pay to take a TEFL course. Literally from the first module, I knew there were so many things that I didn’t know about teaching English- things that are essential to know if you want to be an effective TEFL teacher. I am happy to recommend ITTT TEFL.

Maximo Nivel was the company I chose to do my teacher training course through because they specialize in South American volunteer placements. The course took the form of online training and in-person teaching practice, the latter I completed in Costa Rica. This was before Covid so I don’t know how the in-person hours are arranged now. I gained a lot from both sections of the course. Doing the teaching practice in Costa Rica was a luxury that I could afford at the time and it was a luxury well enjoyed I recommend it to anyone with the budget and available time. Costa Rica is such a gorgeous country and the staff down in Antonio Manuel were really helpful. After returning home to tie up loose ends I continued on to La Paz, Bolivia, where I volunteered as an English tutor. I have fond memories of the year that I spent in La Paz and I remain in contact with a few of my students on Facebook. I wasn’t paid for any of my teachings but I did get free food and board and a bit of pocket money for scheduled trips out to nearby sites and cities. The highlight of these was hands down Lake Titicaca. One of the other teachers and I did the walk from Copacabana town to Isla del Sol-catching a fisherman’s boat from the mainland over to the island- and that will be a memory hard to forget. Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake and this makes for crystal clear blue water. It was SO beautiful there! After my volunteer year, I did consider staying on to teach full-time hours for a language school that offered me work but the salary just didn’t make sense for me so I reluctantly left back home and have since been tutoring students online. Everyone should try volunteering once in their life- it really is a win/win for everyone involved.
