I recently completed TTA The TEFL Academy Level 5 course. I have two concerns:

One. The false advertising saying courses are on special discount for set period of time. This is obviously not true. This just reruns with the clock count down, all of the time. I see it with my own eyes. It is designed to make you buy a course because you think it won’t be discounted after the clock has run down. I would put good money on a wager that the full course price has never been made available on the website, and that its high price is simply a marketing tactic to make the discounted price appear so generous. Are you selling a sofa or a TEFL course?

The second is that my instructor was very hit or miss. Sometimes she would answer with a generic copy/paste reply, but mostly I wouldn’t hear back at all. And don’t bother trying to contact the company. They’ll have you in a ticket queue lasting weeks. Being asked to write a review in exchange for a free starter course also got my back up. If I want to write a review (as I am doing now) I will do it on my own terms. It made me question the trustworthiness of TTA The TEFL Academy reviews I read when I was choosing which Online TEFL course to take. Just so you know, it wasn’t Trusted TEFL Reviews that I was asked to post on. It was a few other review websites that they clearly have a strong preference for, going by their website.

The good thing, and why I’m giving 3 stars, is the course itself. The bare bones of the course is excellent. Despite the intense nature of the content, namely grammar, I never felt overwhelmed by the content. I haven’t used the certificate yet so I’m hoping it’s going to be accepted. If the support had been there, I would have given a higher rating. A mixed-bag TTA The TEFL Academy review, but not a poor one from me. William.

I did not enjoy The TEFL Academy Level 5 course because the course format wasn’t very user-friendly and I never received any feedback on my assignments, or any support finding work. A lot of things are promised on their school website. A lot of things were not delivered. If they uncluttered the course then I believe the study experience would be much better for their TEFL students. I was expecting a steady-paced course with logical steps. Instead, the materials were presented haphazardly and this made it seem that the course had been put together in a rush. The TEFL Academy should also consider editing its school website so that what it offers is correctly published. I don’t consider a list of schools, with some of the links broken, as being provided with “extensive job support”. This was a disappointing and unnecessarily expensive experience for me.

Poor video quality and inadequate feedback. Despite the content of this TTA Level 5 TEFL course being on the whole of a high level, the entire experience was dramatically lowered by the poor video quality in the tuition modules, as well as the feedback on my assignments being consistently subpar. I got the distinct impression that no one had bothered to read my coursework because the feedback didn’t correlate at all with the work I had put in. I also learned later on that TEFL Academy (Ireland/UK) isn’t an accredited program; meaning there are some jobs that I won’t be considered for with the certification from this company. When I brought this up with TEFL Academy they referred me to QUALIFI, which they said accredit them, but the reply I received from QUALIFI only stated that they regulate TEFL Academy’s courses and didn’t mention anywhere in the email that they accredit them. I am 100% certain that I will be able to find teaching work with this certificate as most schools don’t seem to care about accreditation, but the fact that I was misled into thinking TEFL Academy is accredited made me feel a bit cheated. It’s a shame really because apart from the low-quality course videos, I thought the course content was structured really well and it taught me so many things about teaching ESL. The 3 stars are for the course content.

The TEFL Academy Pros and Cons (from my experience as a student on its 168-hour Level 5 course).

Pros:

1. The course was arranged and organized very well and had a user-friendly CMS learner system. I have studied some online courses before this one that had poor Content Management systems.
2. When you complete the course, you receive a substantial list of job offers that are online and also ones located in specific countries.
3. You are not completely alone in the course. Whenever you have a question, you email the school, a ticket is assigned to you, and I tended to get a response back within a few business days to a week. Overall, communication with the school was fairly good.
4. I have a teaching job (online) and my TEFL Academy certificate helped a lot in this process.

Cons:

1. As I soon discovered, every school I applied to for work asked whether I had the 120-hour TEFL certificate. When I answered that I had a 168-hour Level 5 certificate, they said it would do but the extra hours of tuition are meaningless.
2. After completing the course, I received an email from the TEFL Academy that asked if I would leave a review for them on (fill in the blank) websites, and that in return for my writing a review they would offer me a free Teaching Young Learners or Teaching Business English course. I think they mentioned Facebook, Reviews.io, Trust Pilot, and a few others. I wrote back that I might, but I wanted to see how my certification was working for me in my new job (and future job applications) before I committed to writing a review. I receive that same email each end of the week and I wonder how many of this company’s reviews are written by people who just want the free course.

If I were to take a TEFL course again, I would take a 120-hour course because that strongly appears to be the gold standard for what online and abroad employers are looking for.

I wouldn’t pay for a TEFL/TESOL certification course offering more than 120 hours, unless there are 10-20 teaching practice hours included. The 168-hour TEFL Academy course, in my opinion, is marketed to make it appear that you are getting more bang for your buck – you are not.

The TEFL Academy’s 168-hour Level 5 TEFL course was good, but it did raise many red flags.

Is TEFL Academy Legit? The lessons are excellent, but the marking is very poor.

I want to start with what I liked about my TEFL Academy course.

It is a self-paced course, with some assistance along the way, and this was exactly what I was looking for in terms of flexibility and freedom of study. I was able to complete modules at home, in the park, anywhere where I had @, and where it was quiet enough for me to be able to focus properly. The course covers many areas of teaching English, and I liked how it was presented. I guess you could just steam through the course and finish it within a few days by not reading the texts and just answering the questions, but you would be missing out on a lot. As a caveat, though, I do need to add that this is the only online TEFL course that I have taken, so I can’t compare it with any others.

And what I didn’t like about my TEFL Academy course.

What did let the course down though was the feedback on the coursework. The feedback was copied and pasted material. At least it seemed obvious to me that it was. I felt demotivated by this because I hadn’t needed to work my butt off so much on them, thinking that a qualified moderator would fully read my work.

I recommend the course, but I don’t advise to take the coursework too seriously. As long as your lesson plan looks good enough, you will receive the same feedback that I received when I submitted mine.

As a final note, I can write that there wasn’t that much help with a job search, but I didn’t require this support anyway.

I started doing the TEFL course because coming from a legal background and then running a business, teaching was something new and I considered it necessary to know what would be expected of me in such a role. My experience of teaching was little to none. I wanted to feel more confident and fill in some of the missing gaps i.e., identify and attach the grammatical labels.
Doing the TEFL has ticked all the right boxes regarding my goal. My confidence has been boosted, the labels have been attached and missing pieces to my jigsaw puzzle have been found. Also, throughout the course, I have been exposed to invaluable information, ideas that can be used, and a plethora of resources for teaching.

Everything about the course was exceptional, the ease of use, layout, structure, a wealth of information, instructions, end-of-unit tests, and assignments. In addition, professionalism, attention to detail, and administrative efficiency were second to none. During the entire experience, I always felt reassured and encouraged and if I needed assistance, I knew it would be available.

I enrolled in The TEFL Academy’s (TTA) Level 5 course expecting it to open doors for me internationally. While the course content itself was average — not great, not terrible — my biggest issue lies with how the qualification is marketed and the way the company has handled things after the course.

The biggest confusion I’ve faced is around the “Level 5” label. It sounds impressive, but in practice, almost every employer I’ve spoken to is just asking for a 120-hour TEFL certificate. No one seems to understand or care about the “Level 5” designation. I’ve had to explain it over and over again, and it has honestly made my job applications more confusing, not less.

What made things worse was TTA’s aggressive approach to getting reviews. I received repeated emails asking — almost demanding — that I leave a review. I replied and said I didn’t want to, but then I noticed a review with my full name posted on a different review platform. I never wrote or approved that review. That kind of dishonest and potentially illegal behavior completely shattered any remaining trust I had in this company.

If it weren’t for that, I probably would have given this course 3 stars. It met the minimum expectations for a TEFL course. But given how my name was used without consent and how the course is misrepresented to students, I feel I have no choice but to rate this experience 1 star.

Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend The TEFL Academy. There are more transparent and trustworthy TEFL providers out there. Be cautious, especially when it comes to what you’re actually getting — and how your information might be used.

While some modules covered important topics like lesson planning and classroom management, the material often lacked depth and practical application. The activities and assignments seemed outdated, and there was little emphasis on modern teaching tools or real-world classroom scenarios.

Another major issue I encountered was poor tutor support. The course is marketed as having access to experienced tutors, but in practice, responses were slow and often unhelpful. Feedback on assignments felt like templates and impersonal, which made it hard to gauge real progress or improve based on critique.

Additionally, I was disappointed by the job placement assistance. What WILL they change it to next?

4. Fake Reviews and Affiliate Manipulation

Our platform was also targeted by what we have determined to be fake reviews submitted on behalf of The TEFL Academy. This occurred when approximately 10 glowing reviews were submitted within a single 24-hour period. The writing style of these reviews was suspiciously promotional, many using identical phrases and marketing language pulled directly from the company’s website.

Further investigation revealed that one of the reviews came from someone known to us to be a The TEFL Academy affiliate, meaning they stood to gain financially from promoting the program. We have every reason to believe that similar tactics are being used on other TEFL review websites.

Such manipulation not only undermines the trustworthiness of review platforms, but also constitutes a clear breach of ethical conduct. The submission of fake positive reviews is a serious red flag and aligns with the growing body of complaints categorized under The TEFL Academy Fraud.

5. Misinformation and Attacks on Competitors

In addition to submitting fake reviews, The TEFL Academy has reportedly engaged in aggressive attacks against competing TEFL providers, spreading misinformation in an effort to damage their reputation. We’ve been made aware of unsubstantiated claims made by individuals affiliated with The TEFL Academy about other reputable programs—most of which were later proven to be completely false.

This kind of behavior is not only unprofessional, but also deeply harmful to the broader TEFL community. It reflects poorly on the organization and further calls into question its credibility.

6. Change in Ownership and Strategy

The TEFL Academy underwent a change in ownership in 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The timing was no coincidence—demand for online TEFL courses surged during this period. The new owners appear to have capitalized on this boom by heavily marketing the course as a fast-track, affordable way to teach abroad or online.

While this business strategy may be smart from a profit standpoint, it’s not necessarily in the best interest of students who expect a recognized, legitimate, and career-enhancing qualification.

7. Final Thoughts and Recommendations

We want to be clear: Not every student who takes a course with The TEFL Academy will have a negative experience. Some people do complete the program and successfully find teaching positions afterward. However, the number of complaints we’ve received and the company’s pattern of behavior—legal bullying, fake reviews, inflated claims, and misinformation campaigns—have raised significant red flags.

Before enrolling, we recommend that students:

• Verify whether the course certificate is accepted in the country where they intend to teach.
• Compare The TEFL Academy with other reputable providers, many of whom have better track records and do not rely on deceptive marketing.

This is my honest review of the (TTA) The TEFL Academy 168-hour Level 5 TEFL & TESOL course I paid for and completed last month (February 2025).

I chose this program because of the hundreds of 5-star reviews on the Go Abroad reviews website.

It seemed like it was obviously a legit program so I signed up without second thought, using the coupon code to get the discount.

I liked the practical ease of the user experience.

The login was straightforward, but I did see a number of grammar errors within the course content, and I didn’t like the time lags in the communication with The TEFL Academy.

Emails were responded to after day 4, while some of my emails never got a reply.

I steamrolled through the course because I already had a job lined up and I just wanted the course certificate.

I was taken aback by the additional high cost of the certificate (was it a hidden fee?), but it did arrive to my Inbox a week later. Not such a quick turnaround, but nothing really to complain about.

I thought my experience with The TEFL Academy was then over, until, two days later, I received an email from Megan Broccoli. She presented herself as the program’s post-course “Graduate Liaison Officer”.

Her email started off in a neutral tone, but quickly went south when she actually wrote that if I were to write a 5-star review for The TEFL Academy on Go Abroad, The TEFL Academy would say or write wonderful things about me as a graduate if an employer ever needed a character reference from them.

In other words, I was coerced into writing a 5-star review.

Against my inner moral compass, I did write the review, but then deleted it because it didn’t sit well with me.

I chose The TEFL Academy because of those 5-star reviews on Go Abroad.

It made me wonder how many other reviews on there were coerced.

Look, the program was fine and I got the certificate, but this stuff with the reviews left an incredibly bad taste in my mouth.

The way Megan wrote the email verged on the threatening, like if I didn’t do it they would say or write bad things about me for a character reference?

I did vent on the r/TEFL subreddit, but my comment wasn’t published, which also seemed very odd.

My comment was pretty lame in comparison with other comments for other TEFL & TESOL programs.

Seemed to me The TEFL Academy has some kind of agreement with that subreddit.

For these reasons, please label my review “Anonymous”.

It was a positive experience. I could work at my own pace. The TEFL Academy accommodated me perfectly. Information provided in each unit is practical, useful, and accurate. My assignments were marked quickly with excellent feedback given so I could then improve on my next assignment. The instructions were clear and guidance was always offered. I do wish that more examples were given and shorter assignments instead of three long assignments. Overall, though, I thoroughly enjoyed the TEFL Course and I would definitely recommend it!

Not worth the money IMO.

I picked this program because of the hundreds of positive reviews on Trust Pilot. Looking back now, I’m extremely dubious of most of the reviews on that website regarding The TEFL Academy Program. I think many of them are fake or financially related coerced.

I agree with other Trusted TEFL Review reviewers that the course content is of a high standard. My issues began though when I submitted my coursework and then waited over a week for any feedback. When the feedback came, it didn’t correlate with the theme of my coursework. It was obvious that someone from The TEFL Academy office just got around to emailing me a generic reply, without even reading my submission(s).

They also charge you a lot for the certificate, I had no help after the course, and I recently read that they are not even accredited. When I did even more digging, I saw that The TEFL Academy writes trash about their competitors. This was a real turn-off for me.

I wouldn’t take it if I went back in time and had this TEFL course option again.

TTA Online Certification The TEFL Academy review, submitted by Jolinda.

TTA Online Certification.

I went with TTA’s online program. From start to finish, it took me (just shy of) 8 weeks to complete. That’s also factoring in the time spent on the coursework assignments. I’m guessing that’s the usual number of weeks needed to complete this program because I’ve noticed other reviewers needed the same amount of time.

The course was very good, and although it was complicated in parts because of lots of grammar instruction, I managed to pass the course with the equivalent of an A grade. This course might be too intense for people who struggle with long descriptions of grammar. I liked this approach though because I developed into a bit of a grammar nerd by the end of the course.

It’s not all grammar though. The course teaches many approaches to teaching ESL/EFL and there are some really good examples of teaching activities too.

I won’t get an opportunity to make use of the certificate for now because I’ve just started a full-time job in another field, but I hope to get the certification working for me when my current job contract completes itself in June.

I can’t wait to get started on my TEFL adventure when that time comes around!

One final point worth noting is that the person from TTA whom I was liaising with was very helpful and all-around supportive.

I enjoyed TTA’s course, despite the sometimes very intense nature of the study materials.
