I’m a 2023 graduate of the Maximo Nivel self-guided 150-hour TEFL course, and I just wanted to write something about my experience of the program so as to provide some personal insight to anyone else who is considering this program.

The main reason why I chose Maximo Nivel was that they specialize in South American teaching job placements. I have friends and a distant relative living in Argentina and this certification will allow me to relocate there by ticking the box for the work visa. The Maximo Nivel admin has already provided me with the contacts for lots of local schools.

The course is very easy to work through and very user-friendly. Plus, you get to have up to 10 hours of face time with an online trainer and this was really useful because I had a ton of questions about the course and the teaching placement service.

Another thing about the course which I liked was that there wasn’t one massive test at the end. They test your knowledge after each module and this was a great litmus to see how well I was progressing during the course. The feedback I received on my assignments was to the point and very helpful.

I recommend Maximo Nivel because of the helpful school staff and because the certification leads to lots of job possibilities.

Maximo Nivel specializes in placing teachers on the South American continent, so if you have the plan to teach there then I can recommend their TEFL course. I took the course way back in 2021 and soon after I began teaching in Mendoza, Argentina. It was really easy finding a teaching position there and I absolutely loved the year and a half that I spent living in teaching in Argentina. One of the great things about living in Argentina is its close proximity to its neighbors: Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, and Uruguay. Intercity travel within Argentina is hassle-free as well, with the excellent buses serving up airline-style meals and with really comfortable seats. You won’t get rich teaching in Argentina (or anywhere else in South America for that matter) but you will meet incredible people, be able to travel frequently, and you will earn enough to etch out a comfortable local living standard. I can’t recommend the experience enough. Buena Suerte!

Before Course Purchase

Maximo answered all of the questions I had about the course and about where I could teach after the course. They didn’t try to pressure me into taking the course, which I definitely appreciated. I was looking for a course that would qualify me to teach English in Argentina, and after a lot of research online I finally settled on Maximo.

During the Course

There was a healthy mix of text and videos, and they also sign an online tutor to you in case you have any questions or need guidance. There is a lot of information to take in and I would recommend reading up on grammar or purchasing a good grammar book for when you take the course because grammar is one of the main focus elements of this course. At first, all of the new information can feel overwhelming, but by applying it to the lesson plans you soon get a feel for how it all fits in together. If you don’t have so much time to delve so deeply into English grammar before the course then my advice is just to go over the basics, like grammar terminology and time tenses, and conditional forms. It will help you a lot if you have even just the general knowledge of grammar before taking the course.

After the Course

I chose to get the electronic and hardcopy certificate versions. My electronic copy was issued right away, and my hardcopy version came in the post in a matter of just a couple of weeks. Maximo has a dedicated team to providing job hunting services, and they were excellent when it came to providing me with tips on where to teach, who I could teach, how much I would be earning, what questions to expect to be asked in job interviews, how my teaching resume should look, etc. Since completing the Maximo online course, I have taught English in Buenos Aries and I’ve also recently been teaching English to online students. I never had any issues with using the certification.

Value-for-Money

I feel that the price of the course is justified, given the quality of the course and the program’s excellent support network.

Teaching Onsite vs. Online

Nothing can replace the effectiveness of teaching face-to-face. I absolutely loved physical classroom teaching and looked forward to each lesson. Having said that, teaching online is doable and some companies pay around the same as I earned when I taught onsite. You just need to choose the right company to teach for because I’ve seen some paying way below what should be considered as being the standard for online teaching. It’s not that I don’t like teaching online, I just prefer teaching in a physical classroom setting.

Other Notes

TEFL/TESOL is a great way to broaden your horizons, meet new people, and earn relatively easy money whilst doing something you enjoy. Not everyone is suited to teaching, but most of the people whom I’ve met don’t have any regrets about going into teaching English.
